Clackmannanshire memories

Miners

seems likea "million" years ago, but I was ( 6 yrs ) old and remember at holiday fridays, standing with a few other kids outside the pit-baths at the devon pit, asking miners if we could take their bags "pit clothes" home for them, and get a tip...
thrupenny bit, was a lot back then.

When we Were Kids

When we were kids in Fishcross we used to go fishing most weekends, play in the woods, go to the Dam, climb and fish the Ochill Hills, Tooks Pond for eggs, go to the pictures etc. I knocked about with Charlie and John Bradley, Big Jack Bolton, Breck's Bolton, John and Sammy Mcmillan, Jerry Fitzpatrick etc. The people I remember for a laugh were William Joseph Hunter (Cocky Joe) who used to put the coal in the houses for something to eat. And Willie (the Gut ) who rode around Alloa on his bike doing wheelies.
We had some great times - memories never to be forgotten.
The very best to all who read this.

Bicycle Accidents Near Fishcross

Has there ever been any serious Bicycle accidents near Collyland Road? I overtook a cyclist as I was approaching Fishcross from Tullibody as I passed the Cyclist I looked over my shoulder too see if it was safe for me to pull in but there was no Cyclist there? I was thinking I've seen a ghost of a cyclist? Anyone help?

Fishcross

I left Fishcross in September 1962. I was part of the MacKay clan way back when everyone knew everyone. I had a friend across from where I lived at 2 Alloa Road, her name was Catherine Logan. My brother Ken (Kye) had a pal Michael Finnan who now lives in our old house. My sister Moira and Ken have seen Cokey Joe at his old farmhouse in his bath singing, outside, with his boots still on legs hanging over the edge. He used to help with the coal delivery in exchange for a bowl of tea and a piece and jam. I remember getting crisps handed over the wall at play time in the playground of Fishcross school. There's a lot I do remember. My grandparents Maggie and Kenny McKay lived at 21 Lawswell,. My son is currently in Scotland and will be visiting my village on the 11th then heading to Sauchie to visit my family. I'm so proud Adam has gone to check his roots, his grandparents Donald... Cockey Joe

Does anyone remember when the prefabs were being torn-down, Cockey Joe was working for the demolition firm, a couple of hours "here and there" I think, anyways I remember seeing him up on the gable end of one, swinging a mash, knocking the bricks out from the wall he was standing on, "scary". He lived in an empty prefab, with all his clothes in a big chest. I can remember seeing him on a Sunday I think, all dressed-up in a gamekeeper style suit, "plus fours" etc. He was very well dressed and had a pipe with a "bulls head" quite the sight to see. Railway Tavern & Imperial Restaurant, Primrose St

Does anyone remember a pub called the Railway Tavern that used to be in Primrose Street? I actually thought it was Primrose Lane, but can't see that on the map now. Same street as the public baths used to be, or maybe still are, across from what was the Co-Op. It was attached to a restaurant, on an upper floor, I think called the Imperial. My parents owned it in the late 1970s, early 1980s, for a short while, but I see no mention of it anywhere online. Thanks.

Cowie Village, Bannockburn, Stirling.

My father John McAteer, a coal miner, was one of a large McAteer family who lived at 22 Murdock Place in Cowie, this address no longer exists. An uncle Tommy, after WW2, had an small holding at Sauchinford and in the 1930's I would have spent school holidays there.

It would be nice, in my final years, to hear from any other McAteer's (or associated Bruce's, Judge's and Kilmurry's) who have, or had connections with the Cowie McAteer's.

Many thanks, Patrick
