Leghorne House

Hi all, I lived in Collingbourne Ducis for a short time in 1969/70, it was a beautiful place and I have never forgotten my stay there but I can't seem to find Leghorne House, I have been back and looked for it but had no luck and nobody seemed to have heard of it. I would love to know if anybody remembers it and also any history relating to the house.

Swatton Family in Collingbourne Ducis

In the 1800s my gt gt gt grandparents lived in Collingbourne Ducis, house numbers 5, 21, 71, 53, according to the booklet 'Memories of C. D'. My grandfather John Swatton b.1871, d.1951. My father Leonard Reginald Swatton b.1912 d. 1993 lived I believe for about 5 years with his grandparents about 1922. Whilst he was there his grandmother died and is buried in the church at C.D. Also whilst there he recalled there was a fire and all the men and boys came out and filled buckets of water from the stream that was in front of the house where he lived with grandparents. Other members of the Swatton family are also buried in the churchyard at C.D. My grandad - John - settled in Winchester, Hampshire where he met his future wife (Lucy Hutchings), over time they had 6 children - one of which was my father. He out of the six was the only one to have children. My Dad was a Prisoner of War for 5... Read more

The Smith or Obriant Families of This Parish

I am looking for any trace of John Smith who married Repentance Obriant in Collingbourne-Kingston on 25th December 1773. She was my late husband's 6x gr.grandma and any info about the area of descendants would be great.

My parents were married here in August 1953. My mother was raised in the area; my father was in the RAF and had been brought up in the RAF, so had travelled widely.

We moved to Ludgershall, this street (No 5, third house down) in 1975. My father was with the MOD and worked in the REME workshop in Ordnance Road in Tidworth. By then the road although still a close, was much longer than it shows here with lots more houses. As a boy it was a great place to grow up, as you were right on the edge of the country side with so much to do. There was a triangle of unused land just a bit further down Biddesden Lane which we knew as the common. Each autumn we would build a bonfire to compete with the huge one that was built each year at Wood Park for November 5th.
It was in these woods and fields that we built dens, caught rabitts, scrumped apples and behaved like boys did in those days. Ludgershall was a village with some real characters, good and bad and although I was glad to leave home and the village at 17 there can't... Read more

New School

St James' Church 1901

I went to this school when it opened in 1965 and was very new. I remember doing gardening and cooking using new cookers. Our uniforms were brown and white or lemon. I was thinking about it recently when Davy Jones died as we were all Monkee fans. My father was in the army and we lived in the village for 6 years. I sang in the church choir and went to brownies and guides. I left towards the end on 1967.

I went to the St James School next to this church, but left in 1965 when we emigrated to Australia. Surname was Wheeler-Smith. Brothers Michael and Peter. Father Arthur, mother Barbara. Anyone remember? Dad was a fireman and also worked at Roys as a french polisher.
