The Smith or Obriant Families of This Parish

I am looking for any trace of John Smith who married Repentance Obriant in Collingbourne-Kingston on 25th December 1773. She was my late husband's 6x gr.grandma and any info about the area of descendants would be great.

Swatton Family in Collingbourne Ducis

In the 1800s my gt gt gt grandparents lived in Collingbourne Ducis, house numbers 5, 21, 71, 53, according to the booklet 'Memories of C. D'. My grandfather John Swatton b.1871, d.1951. My father Leonard Reginald Swatton b.1912 d. 1993 lived I believe for about 5 years with his grandparents about 1922. Whilst he was there his grandmother died and is buried in the church at C.D. Also whilst there he recalled there was a fire and all the men and boys came out and filled buckets of water from the stream that was in front of the house where he lived with grandparents. Other members of the Swatton family are also buried in the churchyard at C.D. My grandad - John - settled in Winchester, Hampshire where he met his future wife (Lucy Hutchings), over time they had 6 children - one of which was my father. He out of the six was the only one to have children. My Dad was a Prisoner of War for 5... Read more

Leghorne House

Hi all, I lived in Collingbourne Ducis for a short time in 1969/70, it was a beautiful place and I have never forgotten my stay there but I can't seem to find Leghorne House, I have been back and looked for it but had no luck and nobody seemed to have heard of it. I would love to know if anybody remembers it and also any history relating to the house.

Everleigh

What a wonderful childhood, free playing with unlimited access to the downs and salisbury plain, with the exception of the land warden that is, Playing with Andy John and Shamus till we dropped....what fun

First Job

My first job on leaving school in 1964 was at East Grafton, at the poultry packing station, known as CC Chinnery but run by Charles Eady (I believe stepson of the late Mr Chinnery.

I spent 5 happy years working there with a great crowd of people. The site of the packing station is now an upmarket housing estate, with no sign of the previous use. Sadly I went to the funeral of Charles a year or two ago.

Did you or anyone you know work for "Charley"? If so get in touch.

The area now known as "Stibb Green" was until the 1970s or 1980s known as "Steepe Green" although it was pronounced as Stibb by many of the locals.
