South Glamorgan memories

Nash Manor

I remember my aunt Clara Newman worked at Nash Manor for many years when Mr and Mrs Bazley owned it.

Childhood

I grew up in the village and my earliest memory was playing out the back garden of where I lived in Old Barn Cottage. I was brought up with my gran, great- gran and uncle, the family name was Newman. I also used to walk to Llamihangle church every Sunday morning with my nan. I enjoyed many happy times and memories of living here. The sadest memory though that my family have is when the plane crashed in the field next to our cottage and my father and uncles helped with the rescue, this was portrayed many years later by HTV who did a documentary caalled "Shadow across the Sun" which some of my family took part in.

193940 School Days

I remember the Town Hall at Cowbridge.  In those days there was no one way system around it like today.  The school boy interest was the Merryweather Fire Engine that was kept in a garage at the side of the Town Hall. Great fun to see it being driven out bell clanging and the firemen in their then shiny helmets hanging on. A local resident and Fireman was a Mr. Bond who fought fires in the air raid on Cardiff in WW2.  He won a medal for his work there that night. The Caretaker lived on the premises, cannot remember his name but when the L.D.V later the Home Guard used it as their H.Q he was the Sergeant Major.  They slept there at night, duties involved manning a road block at the top of East Street. The officer in charge of the Company was Mr. RH. Williams, Captain Williams who was the local Chemist. The other Sergeant Major was Mr.Bishop.  He was a Porter at the Railway Station.  Gone... Large House With Iron Gates

I moved to Cowbridge with my parents when I was just 5 years old. My mother was housekeeper and my father was the odd job man. I remember large iron gates to this big house. They kept chickens and ducks and there were 3 dogs, Woopsie, Emma and Barney and the daughter had a horse named Sugar. The family had a pencil factory nearby. I remember coming out of the gates and there was a hill and on the left a confectioner's shop. I remember walking to school through fields. Had dinners at school and afterwards had to wash up our plates etc. Can anyone please identify where I was living? This was 1956 and I had my 6th birthday there. We returned to London after about a year as my mother was unwell.

Ash Hall

The place you are referring to is, Ash Hall Ystradowen. I know this as my parents were there in '64/'65 doing exactly same job. The house was owned by the Charnauds, who owned The Pencil Factory. I lived there for a while with my two brothers, it was a lovely house and grounds, very much a hunting family. Mum had to clean all their gear, and cook and make afternoon tea - all very posh.We used to get snowed in and use a sledge in winter. My brothers went to school at Lanharry. Their oldest son used to give me a lift to the bus stop in his mini, as I worked in Cardiff. Small world, aye.

The Town Hall Steps

When I was very young I can remember that my mother used to let me run up and down the town hall steps.

My Family And Llantwitt Major ...

My great-great-grandfather was called John Price, and his wife was Caroline Bamford Escott. They had two boys, Leslie and Edward, known as Ted. They lived in the Old Court House, Turkey Street, this is now owned by Marion Petty, I do believe, who used to own the little sweet shop in the main street. John was a stone masion who made the styles over the cliffs which are still used today, and my mother Gwynneth had her picture taken by one only last year. Leslie who married Phillis Palmer is my grandfather. We still have a few relatives that live in Llantwit and every year have a few days near and tend the family grave in the church yard. We are also related to the Kibblewhites and the poor man who fell over the cliffs many years ago with his girlfriend. My grandfather could remember all the family going out too look for him. I can remember myself my Auntie Millie when very young, and walking in the stream at... Read more
