Childhood Memories
This was the year I first attened Balmaclellan School, the Headmaster was first Mr Walker, who went on to New Abbey, he was followed by Fred Simpson - a great experence from 1944 to 1950. I lived with grandfather William McQueen Biggar at his shop and post office - a wonderful time in the village, curling in the winter, bowls and badminton in the village hall and Sunday School and Church on Sundays.
From Australia to New Galloway
I grew up with the story of my great-grandfather Thomas Handley coming back from India and living at Kenmuir Castle with his wife Agnes Gordon Handley (nee Bain). In 2005 my sister and I came to Scotland with our elderly mother to take her to see the ruins of Kenmuir Castle as it had also been a part of her life history. We took many photos of the castle to bring back to Australia and are continuing to try and trace the link Agnes Gordon Bain had with the castle. The Gordon in her name is the surname of her godfather.
Not Actually A Memory But A Query...
There's a ruined church, still with roof but no windows and totally surrounded by overgrown shrubbery and a tall wall, just west of Glenlochar Barrage heading towards Laurieston. It's on the right hand side heading west and is in a little patch of greenery amongst the fields with only the roof visible from the road. There's an old green way up to it a few hundred yards long. I'm trying to find out more about it. Anyone have any information on it please? I have photos of it but I don't think I can add them on here...
My Old School
This is a view which I know very well as it is taken from Hardgate School playground - the school that I attended from 1939 to 1946. The little cottage on the left was occupied by Peter McAlister & his family and the next property was the School House. Mr Macnab, Mr Souter & Mr Forsyth were the headmasters living there during my school years. We went there to do our gardening - a kind of "dig for victory". There has since been another house built between these two otherwise the scene is virtually the same today.
My Most Memorable Corner
I lived at Corbieton Cottage for 22 years between 1939 & 1961 and this is the view I saw as I came down the hill to go to school, to Sunday school, to Scouts, to the Kirk, to the pub, the Hall, the bowling, the dancing, the concerts et al. On the left hand side, just out of picture is the big tree under which there was a seat and we all congregated there, young & old to hear the crac and put in our own tupenceworth. The road straight in front is School Brae & goes up to the school, it is part of the Old Military Road from Castle Douglas to Dumfries. Smith's shop was on the left and Montgomery's on the right the Post Office was run by Miss Montgomery and was attached to the shop owned by her nephew Bob. Further up the street to the right the Laurie Arms, the first minehost that I remember was Mr Roger, at that time there were petrol... Read more
Edgars
My Grandmother, Agnes Moffat Edgar was born in 1873 at Mop Cottage. I would like to know where the cottage is located. Her father and grandfather, William Charteris Edgar and John Edgar, have headstones in Dunscore Churchyard. John Edgar was a Master Blacksmith in Dunscore, his wife was Marrion Chateris and they had 7 son and daughters. My grandmother great grandfather, James Edgar, married Susan Briggs - headstone at the church - they had 4 sons. I would like to hear any information about the Edgars, Chateris and Briggs.
