A Very Dangerous Route In The 1950's.
A Memory of Countisbury.
It was the late 1950's and we were travelling in a motorbike and sidecar. Mum and dad were on the bike and the two children (my brother and I) in the sidecar. We started to descend slowly down the hill, all wondering at the exciting views. All quiet, reflecting the concern of the parents.... Half way down and so good. Then, the penultimate bend. The brake line snapped. Swerving, stuttering bike, stunned brothers. Dad managed to steer into the escape route sand to a dead halt At least the small fish I had on my lap in my bucket were OK!
We were so close to crashing over the bridge to the valley of rocks below. Wow.
Even some half a century later it remains such a clear memory.
