Cowplain In The 60s

A Memory of Cowplain.

My family moved to Cowplain in March 1961. I was 10 years old and went to Stakes Hill Junior School. From there I went to Cowplain Seconday School for Girls from 1962 to 1967. On the corner of Sylvester Road was Pine Tree Stores. I also remember Carters sweet shop and the electrical/toy shop on the corner of Durley Avenue. We lived on the brand new estate of bungalows on Sandyfield Crescent and until they built some shops on Milton Road our nearest shops were the main road at Cowplain. I can remember going to the Saturday night dances in the Church Hall held by the Rev. Eastwood. We moved from Cowplain to Horndean where my parents lived until they died.
I was in the Girl Guides and we held our meetings at Hart Plain Avenue Junior School.
I think the biggest claim to fame Cowplain Secondary Modern School had was that Della James was a pupil. She went on a to represent the UK in 2 Olympic Games and married athlete Alan Pascoe. She was my prefect when I was a monitor. We were both in Windsor House which was blue, York was green, Stuart was red and Tudor was yellow. In my final year Pauline Oddy was Head girl and deputy head girl was her friend Sheila Smith. The Head Mistress was Miss Cross.

Comments & Feedback

Hi I've just read your comments about Cowplain Girls School in Hart Plain Avenue. I used to live in Horndean with my Mum, Dad, Brother & Grandmother & I used to attend Cowplain Girls School around the time you were there, (my name was Eileen Tippins then before I was married in 1973) Can you remember which year Cowplain Girls School Hart Plain Avenue moved to Crookhorn & changed it's name to Crookhorn Secondary Modern School? Many thanks.
Further to my last comment, I used to live next door to Mrs Grundy, Art Teacher. I was in the Stuart House.
My family moved to Waterlooville in 1962, we were lucky when we moved as the snow had just started a couple of days before we moved in December 1962, and we were not sure if the moving lorry would make it over Portsdown hill, as 1963 was the hardest snow I had ever seen, are house was a new build in Chaucer Close and we did know where our front garden ended for months because it kept on laying for ages. I went to Cowplain Juniors, before going on to Cowplain seniors, I remember Miss Lockwood being my teacher there and Mr Wilson was headteacher, Mr Guy did sports with the Boys, then I attended Cowplain Girls school from 1964 to 1966/7, then we all went to Crookhorn secondary modern school for girls, I was in my second year then, I was in Windsor 1, Mrs Burridge was my form teacher then, her subject was science. Miss Cross was headteacher and Miss Burchill, I think that's how it was spelt was duty head, I remember Miss Mann, she married and became Mrs Fry ( Math teacher) Miss Thomas, Mr Scott, Miss Ash she taught us Geography, Mrs Almans ( RE) Miss Hunt (Art Teacher) Mrs Huntingson also did take us for art, Mrs Roberts, Mrs Care, Miss Wilson PE, Miss Stuart PE, Mrs Young ( Music teacher ) Miss Hutchinson, she took us for music in Crookhorn after we moved from Cowplain, Miss Moxham, Mrs Milner needlework and Mr Machin was the man that helped keep the science chemicals safe. I remember we had a chance to name the school when we moved to Crookhorn, we did want to call it Oaklands,, but that was already taken, or something to do with the Oak trees that grow there, but the next highest choice was Crookhorn, or that was what we were told. I don't have any photo's of any of the girls I went to school with, they got lost over the years, shame, but if there is any out there it would be nice to see them.I know we had a couple of group photo's done, so they may still be someone who has some. I know we collected for to have a swimming pool built at Crookhorn, we raised money with fate's and jumbles, but I had already left the year before it got built, I hope they appreciated all the efforts passed pupils did for them. I know that they didn't allow boys to Crookhorn till 1969, after I left. When we were at Cowplain Girls school, I know we were separated from the boys side of the school, we would get into trouble if we spoke to them, I remember Susan Maclaren 4th Year, getting suspended for two weeks for talking and passing messages on to a boy, harsh times then. My maiden name was "Findon"

I’m Mike and I lived in Park Lane with my my Dad, his lady friend Daphne, and my sister Catherine from 1960ish. My Dad was Bill Stokes who sadly passed away in July of ‘63 and I joined the army later in the year. I went to Cowplain Secondary Modern from ‘60 to December ‘62 and have only bad memories in all respects of my time there. I do remember my mate Jim Peters who lived in houses behind Park Lane and cycling to Cosham frequently with him.
I used to do a couple of paper rounds around Cowplain, one of which included Cherry Tree Avenue at the bottom of Park Lane where I met a girl called Pat Coombes.
Around 65ish Daphne upped sticks and moved to Petersfield so I lost contact with Cowplain when on leave before going to Germany.
Having lost my dad in ‘63 and my mum back in ‘55, joining the army was a good move allowing me to kick start my life for the better, especially as though Catherine had started a new life away.
Many Thanks.
Mike, my Dad was in the Royal Marines too and we went to Singapore in May 1967. I went to St Johns, what school did you go to? Prior to that move I lived in Waterlooville and went to Cowplain Girls 1963 - 1967. I was Christine McAlinden
I lived in Waterlooville 1960-1967 attending Stakes Hill Junior then Cowplain Girls before going to Singapore in 1967. I did an afternoon paper round in Cowplain then switched to a morning round on a new estate around Montgomery Walk where one of my school friends now lives and I visit each time I travel to UK.
