The Oswalds Of Craghead

A Memory of Craghead.

I was born 5.10. 1939 in Craghead, above the shop of Robert Oswald, Master Butcher, my mother being Robert's sister Jane Agnes Oswald and my father Frederick Gustavus King from South London. I went to Craghead primary school (I seem to remember it being on a hill top). My mother and father met in London, when she was a nurse there and we all came up to Craghead at the outbreak of the war. My father joined the 8th Army with Montgomery and served in Africa and Italy. I had a miserable time at school, the other children seemed to dislike me, especially as they saw me as the teacher's pet, and to be honest I was glad when dad, at the end of the war, took us all back south. I think that my birth place has now been demolished and changed into houses.

I went to London and Surrey University and worked in the UK Patent Office for 45 years, helping to grant patents for every radio navigation aid now in use on land and sea and then most of the television systems now in use. I am now retired in South Wales.
