St Von Tromp (Public House)
Hi there, just wondered if anyone knew any information or of any photos of a pub at 70 Church Street called The St. Von Tromp, which closed in December 1922? There would have also been a theatre/music hall in the area...?
If anyone can help it would very much appreciated.

Notre Dame Convent School, St. Helens
I used to attend the Notre Dame Convent School (or Grammar School, as it was sometimes called). I was from Warrington on an 11+ scholarship and had to travel in by bus every morning - then walk past the Town Hall and down Church Road to the convent. The headmistress was a nun called Sister Catherine. There was a History teacher called Miss Pierpont. Sometime in the early 1950s the convent school closed down - I believe it burned down, but I'm not certain. I wonder if anyone has a photo of any part of the convent? There was a playgroung which was walled in from the street. Inside the walls, at the end of the playground there was a grotto with a statue of Our Lady in it. If anyone has a photo of any part of the school, I would love to have a copy and would be willing to buy it and pay for postage etc. I live in Canada now (near Edmonton, Alberta).... Read more
The Games We Played
Sad to see all the games we played as kids are no longer around - hop scotch, he rolly, hide and seek, tic, the skipping rope, piggy, hig im jig, throw out can, cigarette cards, marbles, all healthy outdoor activites. Just writing about these games brought back many happy memories, hope it triggers the same effect on older readers, and I do understand you will be getting on a bit to remember these games. Do I like living in the past? Yes, it seemed a more happy Haydock when I was a boy, or maybe it's me just getting old.
Haydock Reservoir, Nickname Cat Pit
Does anyone have any pictures of Church Road in 1930 or any old pictures of Haydock or the Cat Pit? My name is John Gleave, age 52 years, and my father's name is Jack Gleave, does anyone in Haydock remember me? If so give us an email at: dorrengleave@talktalk.net, Don't panic, it's my wife's name. I look forward to your replies.
The Heyes, Haydock
My great-grandfather was a gardener at The Heyes in Haydock, from the early 1900s up to his death in 1919. He and his family lived at Heyes Cottages. My grandfather grew up there. I am trying to find out more about The Heyes and who lived there when my great grandfather worked there. Does anyone know anything about the place or know where I can find out more?
Haydock Cat Pit
Hi, I lived a lot of my life in Haydock. I lived in Elizabeth Road then Wycliffe Road, then moved to Ashton for 26 years but now I'm back in Haydock. I used to go to the Cat Pit and spend hours there. I'm 54 nearly now.... We used to run through the barley fields and Lyons Maid was there too. We used go down the railway embankment on pieces of cardboard before the trains came ..they were steam trains then. I went to school with David Pendelbury. I remember the farm where the olde Kwiky's is ...Pictons House was there and Pigs at the back ....And Tinsleys Chippy along with Ignits toffee shop and the other toffee shop with all the jars lined up with sweets. Dan Knights..we all used to see Father Christmas upstairs....Maggie Lenseys on the corner too...lol
Photos of Haydock Rugby, Football And Cricket?
I have great memories from 1963 to 1970 when I played all of the above sports. My problem is I can't remember any photos being taken at the time. Has anybody who played any football, rugby and cricket got any photos of the years above? I will look forward to hearing from the players who played in the same teams as me. Thank you. John Aspinall.
