This view looks back towards the town centre. These Georgian buildings with their refined sash windows have gone. The house on the left, demolished in 1980, has been replaced by a two-storey office block of dubious merit, complete with a mansard third storey, while the old Northgate Restaurant beyond, demolished in 1962, has been replaced by a three-storey office block which calls itself Northgate House. It had been an inn until the 1840s, the Rising Sun, then a doctor's house, and finally became a café in 1896. The trees and wall on the right disappeared in widening the road in the 1950s.
