A Wonderful Aunt
My Aunt Emma was born Emma Blood, she had two sisters Ivy and Lily all born in Middleton by Wirksworth. Emma was born circa 1903. In the 1920s she was a domestic at what she called the 'big house at Ashbourne'. She started courting Thomas Gould, he was born Wirksworth and every night he would walk from Wirksworth to Ashbourne, leaving home as clean as a button but by the time he got back home he looked like a coalman - Emma would hide him in the coal shute. Emma would always say that she was related to a Captain Blood who had been a pirate, perhaps that's why she had a dark complexion and wore big gold hoop earings. These two wonderful people are responsible for who I am today. Emma died in the early 1980s and Tom in the 1970s. Does anyone know anything more of Emma Gould, nee Blood?
Raised by A Village
Born in Bonsall, I never realised how lucky I was. The beauty, freedom to play Cowboys and Indians etc. etc. without restriction, was something I took for granted. Not any more. My family still live in and around Bonsall, while I reside in Canada. My greatest memories are and always will be of Bonsall, a place forever etched on my heart. It's sad that I realized too late how good my life was, but I am grateful for every picture and website I can peruse from far away. If you read this and are a resident of Bonsall, enjoy every minute of it. You are truly blessed to be part of such a fantastic village.
MY GREAT GRANDAPRENTS
My Great Grandfather Geo. B. Barton established a hydrotherapy business in Matlock Bank in the late 1800s. I believe the first was Jackson House, then he built Dalefield House(later Lilybank) His daughter, my Grandmother, emigrated to New Zealand. I am interedsted in any photos of the above, information etc. I believe he is buried in a local cemetery. If anyone has any information please contact me at barber@world-net.co.nz Thank you
Passing Through
Matlock is a very pretty place, I remember stopping off at Matlock on our way to Nottingham when I was 8 years old. I remember so well how pretty the place was, the dales, hill sides the scenery, just beautiful.
Holiday 1945
A trailer holiday at Whitsun in late April. All I can remember was that the site was alongside the river and I tried to catch tiddlers in a jam jar, heck I was only 3 1/2 but I would like to know where the trailer park was. We lived in Chaddesden.
My Dad
My dad was born in Hackney, London in 1922. Named Arthur Lawrence Gibbs, son of William Arthur Gibbs. My grandad came to Australia in 1925 with my grandma and with 3 or 4 children pioneed a farm in Northcliffe in Western Australia. I myself have been to England but only once in my life(I was born in 1953). My son and my daughter have both visited the fair country and spent a lot of time there and have been to the old Hackney. I have not been there, and if anyone can help me with any memories or stories I would be forever grateful. Raymond John Gibbs. Your's in trust, take care.
Looking For Wartime Friend
Hi, I am looking for a Mrs H. Higbee ( Claire) who was friends with my grandfather during the Second World War. Based on the info I have, she must have working in one of the USO clubs. Her address was 2 Aden Grove, Green Lanes, N16 Stoke Newington, London. Any advice to help me find her would be greatly appriciated. My grandfather has passed away and I would like to hear about his time in wartime London. Thanks, Don Morrison
