Crowborough Exile
This certainly brings back some memories. I can remember my father plus a number of other people going to the Clock House Dairy in the High Street, to collect the milk, during the bad winter of 1963 when the snow prevented the milkman from delivering it. I would love to hear from anyone with whom I have subsequently lost touch, Evelyn Nicholson, nee Constable.
Please Get in Touch
I have posted a memory under the other place about Whincroft. Please ring 01892654892 if you want to talk about Whincroft days!
Happy School Days - I Was Anne Green!
Rosemary and Antoinette (were you Toni?) picked up my earlier, not very helpful, query since I used my married name and Barbara which was'nt ever used at school! What about Sandy Heathcote, and Mhari Bruce? And Hilary and Jane? It would be fun to hear from anyone. Barbara
Whincroft
Is there anyone out there who remembers Whincroft School, or who was there c 1954 to 1961? I'd love to hear from them.
Walsh Manor
Reading past memories of Walsh Manor brings back memories of mine. At about 1937 we moved in to the cottage at the manor as my grand parents part-ran the manor with a Mr Lindred. The manor then was a home for severely disabled and disfigured people from London hospitals. My father ran the farm my mother was head cook at the manor and my eldest sister was a nurse there. It was lovely on the farm where as kids we all helped, even with the milking. During the Second World War years we used to see all the bombers heading for London and the Doodlebugs which terrified us, they were being shot down and you never knew where they would crash. We went to Whitehill School and had to walk to and from school as we had no free transport those days. We eventually moved to Nightingale Cottage which was part of the estate. I went back to see the Manor a few years ago and how it has... Read more
Green Lane
Although we have only lived in Crowborough for 31 years, we discovered through research that our cottage in Green Lane is one of the oldest. Does anyone have any photographs of Green Lane? We would be interested in seeing these.
Walsh Manor
I have been researching my early schooldays and my first memory is of a sweeping staircase up to a landing where I was been held by matron whilst my mother seemingly abandoned me. She was unmarried (the horror) and at the time it was a girls' school that took a few boys under 7. As my mother could not have me at home, I was packed off to boarding school. I remember there was a brewery close by and every time I smell hops it takes me right back to my days at Walsh Manor. It was not a happy time for me and it was not until 25 years later after my father died that all was explained to me. Now in the 'autumn of my years' I felt it was time to look back without rancour at my early years. I was going to visit, but on hearing of its new owners I have decided against it and posted my memories here instead. If anyone was there in... Read more
Walsh Manor
l too was a pupil at Walsh Manor, unfortunately my memory of the school was not such a happy one. After l left l also went to St Michael's in Uckfield, which wasn't much better, although l made some life-long friends there, who l still keep in contact with and see.
It would be interesting to compare memories with others who also remember Walsh Manor at that time.
Walsh Manor
I was a pupil at Walsh Manor school about 1964 and was wondering if anyone has any pictures of the school or the history of the manor house. I loved being at the school as there was a farm attached where we used to go. The school itself was a lovely place to live and when I was there it was run by Mr and Mrs Hemmings. It was a girls boarding school. One teacher I remember was Mr Rose who took us for art or French. We had a lot of freedom and were allowed to go to the town on our own at the weekend. Sadly the school was closed down by the home office and turned into a boys school and now belongs to the Church of Scientology.
After I left I had to go to a restricted life at Uckfield convent. The nuns were strict but kind. If anyone has any memories I would love to hear from you. V Manning
Memories of East Sussex
Happiness
My grandparents lived in one of the two cottages at the entrance to Eridge Castle, where grandad was the butler. I was so happy there. Granny would take me to see Mr and Mrs Ward who were the head gardener and his wife. Their daughter Ann would take me for walks and was always so much fun to be with. Walking through the woods and down to the lake was a great treat, and how I loved all the wonderful sights there were of wild life and flowers. I remember the smell of the azaleas and rhododendrons, the lodges with the blaze of colour in spring. There was always an air of mystery for me. My Uncle David would take us up to Eridge Rocks for picnics and we would all pick blackberries, and Granny would spend hours making jams and pies for us. Grandad was a verger at the very beautiful Eridge church and so every Sunday Granny and I would walk down the drive to go to the... Read more
Travels With My Aunt
I stayed with my Great Aunt Evelyn Cramer Roberts in one half the "Cottages" (16C left hand side of the road going towards the station) during parts of my childhood and growing years between 1934 and 1956. In my childhood there was the village shop and post office which always smelt deliciously of the groceries sold there. I can remember helping her maid, Emma, clean the oil lamps when I was very young. My aunt knew everyone in the village as she had lived there for many years. We would deliver the parish paper to many of the villagers and we would stay for a while to gather the village news. She was always close to nature and her garden was a wonderful place to play and later to learn about plants and care of them, which lives with me today. It was and I hope still is, a classic cottage garden with ancient yew hedge and herbaceous border and vegetable garden. She would often take me on long... Read more
Herons Ghyll R.C.Primary School
My memories are of Herons Ghyll R.C. Primary School, as I attended between 1949 and 1956,w hen Mrs Mary White was the headmistress, and Miss Duval was the teacher of the juniors. I shall remember also, Mrs Goody who was the lady in charge of meals that used to arrive from Uckfield. She lived near the school and I was able to visit her in the early 1970s before she passed on. Mrs White lived, as I remember, not far from Tonbridge. The days at this school were a joy, and I still have programmes of some of the plays we performed, including "Boots and the North Wind"! We as a family lived in Alderbrook Close in Crowborough, before moving to Mid Wales in 1956.
My Memories From When I Was Young
I was born and bought up in Withyham. I lived at the farm at the top of the common until we moved to a house in Balls Green.
When I was five I went to Withyham School. My favourite teacher was Miss Hosker. Mrs Jenner ran the girls' club in the hall behind the Dorset Arms, where we played games on the cricket field when it was a nice evening and if it were raining we would play games in the hall.
Withyham had only one shop with post office and a garage which sadly has gone, and there is no shop or garage now.
When I was eleven I went to Crowbrough School which later became Crowbrough Beacon School. Because there was not any public transport to the school we had to get a coach which picked you up at the bus stop and took us to school.
Withyham is a beautiful place to live.
The church is a very special place now for me as both... Read more
