RE: RE: Whincroft

Hi Sarah,

I was at Whincroft at the same time as you. I have a school photo and you have signed the back of it! (as Hilda Foord). I could pick out just about everyone that I remember! Amazing thing is, I only have half of this particular photo! I have 2, the other is not signed...Jennifer Osborne sent it to me. So I would not have known it was you!

I was about 11 and left to go to Canada in 1953. Best friend was Jennifer Osborne. Would love to find her! She had a sister there also, Carol. Some of my classmates - Roxanna Barker, Pera English (was always getting into trouble! ) I remember Miss Cholmley and Miss Clayton (I think) who had a spaniel that sat in on her geography classes. Miss Steinitz taught P.E.

We live in the US in North Carolina. Have 6 grandchildren and try to get back to the UK every fall. Where in Australia do you live?

Hope to hear from you,

Belinda (Savill) Churchward

Hi, I started at Whincroft in about 1953 so sorry, I don't remember you. Good luck, anyhow. Barbara Bryant - as was Anne Green.

RE: RE: Whincroft

I left Whincroft in 1953 aged 15, my name was Hilda Foord then. I decided to take off Hilda by deed poll and use my second name of Sarah. I remember Miss Cholmeley well. I emigrated to Canada with Marion Gambrill, a senior at school when I was a junior, she married a Canadian and I came back and married a Scotsman, hence the name McCulloch. I now live in Australia with my two sons and 3 grandchildren. Is there anyone out there who remembers me? I had red hair and glasses then. I travel to UK each to visit my family and friends. From Sarah McCulloch, nickname Sally.

RE: RE: Whincroft

Please contact me on 01892654892 if you have memories from around 1959 to 1961 when I was at Whincroft school as a 7-10 year old, until it closed. I have fond memories but was quite mischievous! So you may remember me as a naughty little girl who was often in trouble with Miss Vyse - my teacher! Having taught myself now for nearly 39 years, I realise that the naughty lively chatty ones quite often become teachers themselves, having driven their own to distraction! I have wonderful memories and some time will write about them if I get time. I also made a rough room plan after I left. Some of the most exciting events were Miss Vyse's dog swallowing a drawing pin! and being given a cotton wool sandwich with mysterious effects, and the week we managed to secrete a guinea pig or something similar in the wood[ my friend had brought it back from her weekly boarding weekend] Sleeping on an army bed in a classroom for 1 night because I had been talking after lights out!.. the aged aunts who relieved the matron and poured boiling hot baths.. and the Back of Beyond- a glorious place of confusion and oddity near the kitchen. But best of all were Miss Colmoneleys wonderful reading evenings round the fire which inspired me with the Borrowers and Pilgrims Progress etc. It was a school with a wonderful atmosphere and worth fondly remembering together. Please get in touch!

RE: RE: Whincroft

I am trying to trace my half sister Sonia, whom I have not seen for about 50 years. I think she was the young matron who arrived at your school in about 1958. She might have had the surname Healing at that time. If anyone knows where she is or what she is now called, or whether she married, I would be very very grateful. Thanks Joanna Healing

Great to hear from two Whincroftians (?). Are there more out there - especially Sandy Heathcote and Hilary?

RE: RE: Whincroft

I was also at Whincroft School between 1956-1961. In same class as Hilary Cholmeley, Penny Terrington, Sandy Heathcote. Interested to hear from anyone in same class.

RE: RE: Whincroft

I attended Whincroft School for Girls in 1954. I was about 8 years old. I lived in Crowborough, Sussex. My dad was in England on a Fulbright Scholarship for one year. I would love to read memories of this area and school.

Yes, I remember Miss Clayton with spaniel and Miss Steintz. My best friend Tishy Humphries now lives in Ontario, Canada, with family and Pat Jones got married. We used to chum around together I do have a couple of group photos of Whincroft girls. I live in Queens Park NSW Sydney. I retired in 2007 from University of Sydney Law School where one son studied law and is now a barrister. Hope to hear from you - I have not really got into this sort of thing - now I am finding it rather exciting. Cheerio for now, Sally.
