CINEMAS IN CROYDON

I lived in Croydon until 1969 ( the year I got married and moved away ) My Dad - Len Marsh - was a Cinema Manager with the ABC chain, and we lived very near the Rex Cinema, Norbury, closed in 1962. Dad was based there for a time, but acted as Relief Manager all over the South London area : cinemas he managed at various times included the Regal, Purley, Mayfair, Tooting, Ritz, Balham, Majestic, Mitcham and the Regal, Streatham. Also others whose names escape me at Forest Hill, Brixton, Elephant and Castle and Camberwell. His last job before leaving cinema management was at the ABC ( formerly the Savoy) at Broad Green, West Croydon. Most of the cinemas he worked at are long gone, I suspect, but if anyone has memories of cinema - going in Croydon during the 1950's/60's, I would be delighted to hear from you. Anyone remember the small cinemas in Croydon High Street, the Odeon and the Eros ? There was also the Davis Theatre, at the top of Scarbrook Road, closed and pulled down in c. 1959. At Thornton Heath there was the Granada : if you were a devotee of "Saturday Morning Pictures " as we called them, you were an "ABC Minor" if you went to the ABC shows, a "Granadier" if you went to the Granada. There was also the Classic, South Croydon - considered rather racey, as at one stage it specialised in continental films, and our trick was to bluff our way in to see "A" or "X" rated films that we were not meant to be able to get in to. My Dad died in 1997, but among his possessions I found the badge he used to wear when on "minors duty " - Uncle Len he was called !
One advantage of my Dad's job was that I never had to pay to go to the cinema - I could either use Dad's staff pass or his contacts - because the various cinema managers knew each other, he could even arrange to get me into the "opposition" cinemas : this impressed my girl - friends no end ! I also think that there was a small cinema in Thornton Heath High Street called the Pullman, but by the time I was a pupil at nearby Selhurst Grammar School, it had been turned into a D.I.Y. store ( it was almost next door to the Thornton Heath Swimming Baths, as I recall )
I am engaged on an MA in Public History at Ruskin College, Oxford, and am considering doing my dissertation on some aspect of the historical significance of cinema. Anyone who has memories of Croydon cinemas in the period 1946 - 1962 ( my Dad's time ) please, please contact me. Dad left very little memorabilia from his days as a Cinema Manager, and I am trying to put together as much material from that time as I can. Someone ought there may remember Dad, may have worked with him, been chucked - out of a cinema ( ! ) by him for misbehaviour !
I have not been back to Croydon - except briefly - since I married, and for the last 35 years have lived in Leicester. Would like to come back, if only to ride on the trams ( yes, I am an anorak as well ! ) and remember watching the trains from the footbridge just north oof Norbury Station. By one of those odd quirks, when the Rex Cinema, Norbury, was demolished in the early 1960's, an office block was built on the site, and when my mother returned to work after having us kids, she got a job in that same office block, on the site where Dad had worked. Many years later, after my parents were both dead, my wife got a job with Age Concern and had to go to occasional meetings at their Head Office which was - guess ! - in the same office block in which Mum had worked. Wonder what the chances of that kind of coincidence happening are ? Anyone remember the night when P.J.Proby, doing a live show on the stage of the ABC, Croydon, split his trousers, and the story made the national press ( wouldn't raise a murmur todsay, would it ? ) My Dad was on duty that night, and had to make the decision to bring the curtain down and stop the show ! Since I have mentioned Selhurst Grammar School, also be god to hesar from anyone who was there with me - from 1959 to 1966.

A great contribution by Colin Marsh. Brought back many many memories.

I remember going to the ABC at Broad Green to see Cliff Richard and Cilla Black, we never heard Cliff sing though because we were screaming so much!! I was also there for the PJ Proby concert when PJ split his trousers right down the seam and it was in the paper the next day and my mum told me off as she said I should have come home - she was disgusted!

RE: RE: CINEMAS IN CROYDON

Like Colin Marsh's very interesting article dealing with the Rex Cinema at Norbury, I also was engaged by ABC Cinemas to serve various management duties within the South Eastern Area. I remember Mr Leonard Marsh very well, also the Rex Cinema, my parents having moved to Norbury circa 1929 and therefore I have a fair knowledge of the area. The Rex Cinema which opened in 1937 was an attractive near Art-Deco interior ,not a popular venue with patrons, unlike the Regal Streatham and the Savoy Broad Green Croydon. I still reside in Norbury, Pollards Hill Area, the Park at the top of Pollards Hill North has hardly changed since my childhood, sadly not the case with the High Street. I did return to the site of the Rex Cinema when it was called Radnor House and was engaged to work as a Supervisor for the Construction Industry Traning Board, which eventually moved to Norfolk. The site is now a block of unattractive flats. Oh! Dear..... Ronald Alexander-Mace

RE: RE: CINEMAS IN CROYDON

Hello,

We have a 'Pullman programme for July' booklet and I was wondering if anyone knows any information about it.

Inside the booklet it has cinema listings at Brixton, Bromley, Lee Green, Herne Hill and Thornton Heath.

RE: RE: CINEMAS IN CROYDON

I spent time in the Air Training Corp. prior to my draft into the R.A.F. About the year 1953 the Croydon Odeon held a fundraiser for the RAF Benevolent Fund and several of us attended a performance wearing our uniforms. During the intermission we passed cans up and down the rows of seats (rather like being in Church!) seeking donations.
Then, when the main film commenced we went upstairs to a room where we counted all the money.
After that two of us were given a chance to see the projection room and were shown how the reel changes were made. The most interesting part for me was our visit to the roof of the cinema.
In those days films were highly flammable, and by law when not in use the reels of film had to be stored in a fire proof area. At the Odeon this was a locker on top of the building.
We also got to see the movie for free but do not remember the title. I think it may have starred Ann Todd and had a 'flying' theme. Could Nigel Patrick also been one of the stars?
Departed the UK in 1967 and have not been back to North End Croydon in a long time so do not know if the Odeon still exists.

RE: RE: CINEMAS IN CROYDON

Ah, now all sorts of bells are ringing. I remember Beatrice Avenue and Pollards Hill well - I lived in Stanford Road until I went to University in 1967. In 1955, when Sally dates her memories from, my Dad was almost certainly the Assistant Manager at the ABC Rex, Norbury. Although he spent a lot of his time travelling around South London acting as a Relief Manager, Norbury was his base until he moved to the Savoy, West Croydon in the late 1950's.

I also remember walking to the Granada, Thornton Heath - unfortunately, I had to pay to get in there, as Dad did not know the Granada Manager well enough to get me in free. I remember that the Saturday morning "ABC Minors Matinees" cost 6d. in the stalls and 9d. in the circle - so Sallys figures of 1/3 or 1/9 sound about right.

Don't remember there being an organ at the Rex - but my memory is not infallible, and there may well have been. Certainly was at the ABC Majestic in Mitcham - I remember Dad allowing a yoing jazz musician, Roy Budd, to practice on it.

Satisfy my curiosity, Sally - is ALLCARD your married name? If so, what was youir maiden name, and did you go to Norbury Manor Junior School?

RE: RE: CINEMAS IN CROYDON

My brother, sister and I used to go to the Rex in Norbury (where we lived, firstly at Beatrice Avenue and then at Pollards Hill). We were allowed to go to the Rex with my brother in charge, at a cost of 1/3d or was it 1/9d ! I still remember the wonderful organ at the Rex, and remember seeing Village of the Damned there, which was very scary. The Granada at Thornton Heath was also another popular destination, and still within walking distance (I'd probably drive now !). Also latterly used to go to the Fairfield Halls, where I saw the Kinks, Twinkle and the Beach Boys (very sophisticated !). It was great to read your account and have a trip "down Memory Lane".

RE: RE: CINEMAS IN CROYDON

Alison- good to hear from you. I remember the ABC Minors song as well - although my Saturday mornings were spent mostly at the ABC Rex Cinema, in Norbury - it was the nearest to where we lived, so I went there with my friends every Saturday whether Dad was working there or not. By the time Dad moved permanently to the ABC Broad Green, I had rather "grown out " of the Minors - spent most of my weekends on Sea Scout activities in Mitcham.

Yes, I also remember stuff being chucked off the balcony to those of us below - also, we used to like throwing things into the beam from the projector. We also used to make one hell of a noise whenever the film broke down!

The "talent contest " rings a vague bell. Dad was always having to dream up "stunts" to keep us interested - when a Western film was on, for instance, he got all the kids to come in cowboy outfits. Difficulty for me was, even when Dad was not working on a Saturday morning, or not at the Rex, all the staff knew who I was, and I had to behave myself. A bit like being a policemans child, I guess, or a Vicar's son.

Thanks for the memories : guess you mjust be about my age, and may well have known my dad. It's a small world.

Regards

RE: RE: CINEMAS IN CROYDON

My sister and me were regulars at the Broad Green Saturday morning 'pictures' every week. We all used to sing "We are the minors of the ABC!" every week!
I think they had a talent show sometimes, though can't remember entering even though we had showbiz aspirations.
I can remember it being a bit chaotic and things were thrown from the balcony onto the heads of those in the stalls.
Happy days!

RE: RE: CINEMAS IN CROYDON

I well remember the cinema at the top corner of Surrey Street and Scarbroook Road. Was it the Palladium? I remember if I wanted to go to a film where you had to be accompanied by an adult, quite often they would pay for me so that meant I could buy a bag of chips from the chippy in Surrey Street. Oh happy days!!
