Home Sweet Home
I was born in Lancing Road, numnber 38a, and have an elder brother John. I can remember at one end of the sStreet corner was a vegetable shop and the other was a junk yard, at the other end was a sweet shop and the other side was a grocers by the name of Hopkins, where I can remember going for a half pound of broken biscuits. Around the corner was Purely Way Roundabout, where my dad took me every year to stand and watch the London to Brighton old car race. My memories of May Day and the Croydon General Hospital's embedded in my thoughts as I was ill quite often. My first work was in the A G I factory, and then I moved to Reeves furniture shop delivering new and auctioned goods. I often think back to my mates Colin Parker, Dave Dulerway, Peter Jones and Rodney Fife, and many more whose names have gone from me. During the week there were a horse and cart delivering vegetables, an ice cream seller on a tricycle with an ice box fitted to the front, and on a Sunday came the cockle and Mussel van which we bought from for a Sunday treat, and finally a man came to sell wooden toys. The Streatham Ice Rink was a regular place for our family on Saturdays. Finding and reading the Croydon Memories has bought back so many memories of my old stamping grounds and things my poor grey cells have ceased to remember. At the age of 18 we moved to Swindon in Wiltshire and often returned to Croydon for weekends with friends. I personally thank everyone for keeping this site going and I am addicted to new comments.

How lovely to hear about Lancing Road. My uncle and dad had a demolition yard there. I remember going there as a young girl and going out in the big lorries with my dad. My nanny and grandad lived in Sydney Road, South Norwood. So that's why dad and uncle Harry had a yard in Lancing Road, as it was close.

Hello, I came across this today, the same day I found out some of my relatives lived in Lancing Road! No one remembers anyone by the surname of Ellis or Porrett, by any chance, do they? :) Jenny

My late father (John Carter) lived with his parents & sister in Lancing Road during the war years. He used to tell me about the neighbours who used to bring their horse (rag and bone) inside the house during the bombings at night! He often talked about going over to the common to collect the tin foil from the raids.
After the war, the family moved to a council property in nearby Onslow Road.
