The Pictures And Being Young & Stupid

Hi Keith, I had actually written to you two months ago, but they (the site) must have sensored my message because I had written my e-mail address. I had mentioned that when I told Ken (my brother and your fellow mate) that you had responded Ken wanted to contact you. Ken is fine and living in San Fransisco, Marg is fine and living in a suburb of San Fransisco, and I recently moved to Tucson (out in the hot desert). Unfortunately, Ralph died of a viral infection of the heart about 15 years ago, my dad died in 1970, and mum past away 5 years ago.

Tell Sue that I had a crush (thought she was sweet) on her while growing up, and tell her I remember Marg getting into big big, BIG trouble over taking the cutains down, but funny on hind site. I guess Marg must have been inspired by the movie, "Gone with the wind"!

Sorry to hear about your dad. Thanks about the update on the sweets, I had foregotten about the chewing tabaco candy. When I get off this site I will lookup where you live.

I'll tell Ken to read this site to read your comments, he will be thrilled to hear from you. Talk about doing unhealthy things while being young and stupid, like tearing apart fireworks to build bombs with the gunpowder. Steve

RE: RE: The Pictures And Being Young & Stupid

Hi Steve, never did get the message, you must be right about the site. Sorry to hear about your losses in the family. It must have been a great shock for you all Ralph dying so young. It will be nice to hear from Ken. When you all left for America I remember being quite envious about you being in the land where all the cowboys were. I also remember when you kept coming down to give me all your toys that you were unable to take with you. It was like lots of birthdays and christmases all wrapped up in one.

Talking about fireworks I remember putting bangers in empty milk bottles squatting down looking at them with my face only a couple of inches away it's a wonder that there weren't any nasty accidents.

Do you remember Paul Langley lived at No. 1 (a bit of a mummies boy) we were all having a snowball fight one winter's evening, he came out of the back door and said "his mum said he can throw snowballs at us, but we must not throw them at him" we all pelted him with snowballs. Sue and Margaret dragged him through the snow by his feet he went running in doors then the next minute his mum came out and told us all off.

I met his mum many years later she told me that Paul had joined the army as soon as he left school. It was the time of the Northern Ireland troubles and I bet he had more than snowballs thrown at him there. It shows you how a person can change.

We went to Canterbury Road a couple of years ago and it is looking pretty run down. Keith

ok Keith, I made a comment,..... don't know where it is, but saw that some of my typing was not so good....just so you know I know, remember is spelled this way, write, to write to someone is spelled this way and go, not to. Otherwise you will not be able to understand my comments. I can't find it but hope you can.  Margaret Matheson from San Ramon California...used to be Margaret Redpath

RE: RE: The Pictures And Being Young & Stupid

Hi Keith,

Talking about Paul L., I remember sitting outside under their kitchen window and listening to the father slapping the ---- out of the mother. I remember thinking at the time that parents could hit their kids (every parent did) but I had never heard of parents hitting their spouse. If the father could beat the wife it should not surprise any that he probably beat Paul too. No wonder a bit of a Mummy's boy, sad, very sad, just glad that it wasn't me. I earned my share of punishments for legitimate reasons.

I also remember the snowball fights with the kids from the flats accross the road (I think we called our selves the Double Diamonds and they called themselves the Black Panthers). Someone always ended up getting hurt (bloody), only to find out that some of their snowballs contained stones. I also remember a policeman being called one summer and talking to us about throwing stones at boys across the road. We or they must have been trouble. It must have been them, because I always told mum it was their fault. Well at least thats my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Do you remember Christine White? I also thought she was quite a "looker", what happened to her? Paul Bigrigg's older sister Christine, or Sue Montgomery, or her brother Robert Montgomery?

I also remeber telling Paul Bigrigg that I thought his mother was getting rather fat, just to learn (the first time) that expectant mothers gain weight when they get pregnant. As I said, young and stupid... Steve
