Tattenham Corner In The 1950,S

A Memory of Croydon.

I use to live along Epsom Lane North Known as the switchback to locals because of the dips up and down in the road, my father bought South Tadworth along there , where I grew up from 1940 to 1957 when I got married.
I worked in Tattenham Corner Restaurant as Manageress and The Shack as snack bar was called by locals.
164a Sutton bus crews use to stop for tea breaks there, also 406 bus crews from Kingston.
I use to have Longhurst transport drivers, Hall& Co, and many more all loved my cups of tea and snacks, made lots of friends but sadly most of them have passed on.
I use to have Afternoon Tea Dances in the Tattenham Corner Restaurant and Evening Dinner Dances what so many people enjoyed in them days.
Derby week it was 4 days racing in them days the Derby was always on a Wednesday and the Oaks on a Friday, we had show out sunday before the derby when Prince Monalulu use to be on the downs shouting i.ve gotta horse tipster in other words, also lots of side shows and stalls selling there wares, Bensons and Bottons big Fairs use to come every year all the locals looked forward to Derby Week to have some fun.
I remember all the shops in the 1950s at Tattenham Corner they was only on one side of Tattenham Cescent , only the restaurant was on the otherside.

back in 1960s Dad had Greensleeves, a Hardware shop at Tattenham Corner, he had retired from Moss & Lawson in Thornton Heath and opened up a Hardware shop, when I came back from NZ in 1972 my then fiance worked with Dad there. We lived at nearby Walton on the Hill. I used to work in Epsom with Lester Bowdens. 109 High St. Epsom. have fond memories for Surrey as today, back in lovely NZ!
