Growing up in Croesy
I grew up in Croesyceiliog at Raglan Court next to the playing fields and I went to Abyschan Grammer School. There was no bypass road then, and the railway was still was bringing coal from the valleys down to the docks in Newport. I used to lie in bed as a child and hear the train shunting past. In summer was the sun was still high and, though it was bed time, it was too light to sleep. I used to lay in my bed and listen to the sounds of people still up and playing in the fields outside.
I remember the woods in spring and the bluebells. My grandmother used to love the bluebells and my siblings and I would pick them for her. Mountains of them, of course.
My usual childhood troubles were often met by an escape to the woods, and I still can see the sunlight shining through the trees, filtering through the wooded paths I used to know so well.
Its been such a long time. I was young then, and not always so grateful for the beauty of my home. My home now is far away.
Its been many years but, the memory will always remain of growing up in the woods and farm lanes; and not let us forget the tadpoles in the canal
Australia is home to me and, its just as beautiful, but my heart will always yearn for the beauty of Cwmbran and the Torfaen.

RE: RE: Growing up in Croesy
I think this account of growing up in Croesy by Valerie Barton is so beautifully well composed, almost poetical. I could see all her memories in my minds eye and I can certainly feel how much she misses the place where she grew up. It was a real pleasure to read this, it made my day. I live at Coed Eva but next time I am in Croesy, I will give the woods your love Valerie. I wonder, do they have bluebells in Australia?

RE: RE: Growing up in Croesy
I moved to Croesyceiliog in 1963. First I lived in Hazel walk where I met my new friends Marie Riddout and Judith Pollard. I went to school in North Road and then St Albans in Pontypool. We then moved down the road to Garwood Drive and then my dad bought a new house in Weldon Close. I was happy to move as every time I did I added more new friends. We spent many nights at Croesy Youth School Club and then, just as everyone else did, went to Cwrt Bleddyn, the very first night club in south Wales. I worked for five years as a window dresser in David Evans and as a barmaid at the Greenhouse pub, and had a part time job taking photos at Savis night club. I was always saving my money in order to leave home to move to the big city of Manchester. After quite a few years living in many parts of the UK I met and married a lovely young man who lived in Chepstow, we married and I have a lovely family and run my own local business. My brother and sister moved away many years ago and so did my mum but Monmouthshire is my home and what a lovely one it is.
