Dagenham 1934 -1950
My mum and dad were married in Old Dagenham Church and I was christened in the church in the mid thirties. I was educated in Fanshawe School from the infants right through to the secondary school and left school in Xmas 1949. My father owned 'Alberts' boot and shoe repair shop which was situated in a alley, which was access to lock up garages behind 'Gyps' the greengrocers on the corner of Heathway and Parsloes Ave. We lived in Kingsmill Road and my grandparents lived in Fanshawe Cresent opposite the school, and some people might remember that my gran had a monkey which sat on the windowsill in the summer. I will stop at that otherwise I will bore you all with my exciting life story. By the way the Headmaster of the senior school at the the time was Thomas Allen.

RE: RE: Dagenham 1934 -1950
I remember Fanshawe school very well, I left there Christmas 1945.
Yes Mr. Allen was headmaster, Toddy Reece was my schoolmaster, then there was Mr. Maguire - woodwork, who would tell you to go back to him after lessons for punishment when you had done somthing wrong. But then forget what it was that you went back to him for.
Mrs Ramsbottom - Geography, Mr. Barnes - I can't remember what he did. But he had a great big bushy moustache who used to march us kids into school from the playground saying 'eft ight eft ight' as if he was on a parade ground, and his lip used to curl up on one side causing us kids to snigger.
Miss Lemon, what a ferocious creature she was, with bar glass spectacles
that was almost capable of turning recalcitrant kids to stone. Her favorite weapon was a drumstick, and she liked to use it on the top back part of your thigh.
There are others I remember. But to get on to the Heathway. Yes I remember 'Alberts' the boot repairers down the side of 'Gyps' green grocers. It always seemed rather mysterious to me down there Incidently 'Gyps' has been in the Heathway since 1932 and is still going strong.
I lived in Meadow Road opposite that part of Parsloes Park, that had the wartime underground shelters built. Do you remember them?
