I remember the Griffin Hotel as the Griffin PH, when as a student nurse I visited it with my elderly grandmother Minnie Grainge on days away from London. She was so proud to be escorted by her eldest granddaughter and as a local woman whose family had come from Woodham Walter was acknowleged by so many as she walked through the... [more]

Essex memories
From 1961 to 1967 I attended Woodlands School in Oaklands Way, off Postmans Lane, Little Baddow. It was a tiny girls school run single handedly by the late Dorothy Bromley, the classrooms being two white wooden sheds in the garden. There was no playground but there was a grass tennis court that we the pupils had to maintain.

Elijah Mecklenburgh of the Old Rodney Pleasure Grounds

Chelmsford Photographic Memories
Although not the highest point in Essex, Danbury certainly commands an impressive position. Drivers of vehicles such as the gig in the foreground, not only had the gradient to contend with, but also the uneven road surface. It would certainly have been a challenge for the early cycle clubs who met here in the late 19th century.

Danbury is situated on the main road between Chelmsford and Maldon. Danbury Hill is the second highest point in Essex, and the old village spreads downhill from this point. Sir Walter Scott mentioned the 16th-century Griffin Inn, which still stands, in his 'Waverley' novels.

Chelmsford Photographic Memories
Danbury sits at the top of a long uphill haul on the road from Chelmsford to Maldon. Before the Navigation was opened, this was the main thoroughfare between the two towns. The low wall on the extreme left had been a pound - an overnight stopping-point for animals being driven to Chelmsford's livestock market.
