Entree Into That Green And Pleasant Land.

A Memory of Dartford.

My name was Jeannette Turner. In about 1936 my mother father and self-age 3 moved from the Eastend of London, via first moving into 46, Hillingdon Road Barnhurst, to stay with my recently widowed Auntie Daisy.

My mother heard that new houses were being built at the old market town of Dartfod. I have retained a strong memory of the occasion when me and 'Flo' (i called my parents by their first names -they were'moden' ) visited the new building site.

Mr Kelsey was in his office/hut on the Wilmot Road building site. He was wearing a long grey coat, a ginger moustache sad, watery blue and an ancient, battered trilby. The air smelled of cut wood, fresh paint, I was excited, as suddenly was Mr Kelsey.

Flo was 'good looking.' Her real name being Jane, perhaps 'Flo' was thought to be more glamorous.

Six months previously, Alf - my Dad had ( According to my mother) carelessly allowed a lorry to run over his foot. The result being a loss of the weekly wage and an income of only thirteen and sixpence per week. Which of course cause an incursion into there 'deposit on a house' fund.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, Flo related the sad tale to Mr. Kelsey and RESULT!!
We were able to move into 126 Wilmot Road for six pounds down an thirteen and six a week.

Aunt Daisy said, darkly, "He'll be round to see you, you know." Well, of course he did and Flo opened the front door, thanked him, in her most charming manner for the flowers whilst firmly closing her new front door. I hope that you enjoyed that very true story Jeannette Coleman Nee Turener
