The Knocker Up.

Does anyone remember George Clark, the knocker up? George and his wife Ethel (my grandparents) lived on Barmborough Street, and they also kept an allotment with pigs. People used to take peelings etc. in exchange for a few sweets to my grannie's, which my grandad used for mixing with the pig meal and spuds. My gran's sister, Florrie Young, I believe lived at the top of Tickhill Street. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers them as I am researching my family tree. I was born in 1946 at 2, Doncaster Road. Gran died in 1964 and Grandad died at Conisbro' in 1971. I have fond memories of Denaby, and visited them weekly.

RE: RE: The Knocker Up.

Hello, I remember your grandparents very well, would George and Edna be your parents? They were always known as 'Uncle Jud and Aunty Edna'. I was often at their house. Howard Gueast lived next door at the first house and Roly Grindles lived further to the right. I lived opposite Breezes shop further up. Christine went to Mexbrough Grammar School, Kenny was in my class, we used to play together when we were small, and then Terrence was born, I remember seeing him in his pram just after he was born, 'sqwawking loudly'. I used to collect peelings for ''Mester Clarke'' on Saturdays with a small barrow my dad made for me, and I was always given twopence (a fortune). Mrs Clarke used to rattle the bedroom windows with a long cane, and she always had a black raincoat on, they were nice people to me, and they knew my mam from when she was a girl as she lived straight opposite at 41 Barmbrough Street, They also were friends with my Grannie Wright, whose husband Charlie was shot dead in Denaby Woods by a gamekeeper in 1932. I would imagine you were called Jessica after your auntie Jessie, 'Uncle Jud''s' sister, she lived opposite me when I lived in Hatfield, Doncaster (I live in Ireland now). She was a very nice person, and she was a conductress on the tracklesses and 'flyers' (buses)and I know her daughter Pat, and I remember her daughter too. If I can help further please let me know.

RE: RE: The Knocker Up.

I can also remember 'Uncle' Jud taking myself and Kenny down the pastures to visit a Gypsy camp at the bottom of Melton Hill at the crossroads when we were about six years old. I think one of the Gypsies was his cousin,. I remember having a drink of water there and seeing the bow-topped wagons and horses. The car we went in was ancient, I think it was from the 1920s,an old Morris, it was great fun, and he kept it on his dad's garden near the pigs on Denaby Lane end, happy times they were.
