Suffolk memories

Family History

My ancestor was born there in 1793 and worked on the land. he then walked down to Barham where he met and married his wife. A couple of years ago I visited Occold and wandered the same streets he probably walked. At that time the Beacontrere Arms was still open and I enjoyed a meal there - there had been a pub there from 1600s so my ancestor didn't have to go thirsty!!

Grandfather

I have only visited Eye once and that was to visit the Queens Head Inn in the centre of Eye. My grandfather was born there and my great-grandfather owned it. I know it is over 550 yrs old and a magnifent old building. I have just recently heard that it has closed? I would love to hear from anybody about this. My past family were all farmers in that area and also some of the neighbouring areas. They went under my mother's maiden name of Rush, is there anyone left?

My Mother

My mother was born in Rishangles, 12th Sept 1919, her mother's (my nan) maiden name was Catchpole.

Eastwick Farm

I lived on the farm[Eastwick] from 1952-1963.My father was Fred Hillen & my mother was Nancy Hawes Hillen. It was a peaceful place to live. I hope to visit my old homeplace someday. It would be nice to go back to my childhood for just one day but all I have are my memories........Lori

Hillman Imp Outside The Red Lion

Market Green c1965

We moved to Debenham in 1964, when I was seven years old. Having come from Oxfordshire, where the houses were built of stone, I remember being amazed that many of Debenham's old houses were painted pink. 'Suffolk Pink' is the traditional colour of the limewash used on the timber-framed houses in this county. The Red Lion, the pub on the right of this photo, was one example.

The Hillman Imp parked outside the pub in this picture, belonged to my parents. They had just stopped to pop into the Post Office, which is next to the Lion. If you look very closely, you can just see the silhouettes of my brother and me, sitting in the back seat!

The Hillman Imp was new when this photo was taken. It was sky-blue, and we were excited to have such a modern car, with its folding back seat and rear window that opened. It was quite a departure from our previous car, a Morris 8.

Low House

lived here in the 'low house' for a couple of years with my parents; eddie and anna macleod, in fact i feel my heart still lives here. the sunday hunts, kippers on a friday, local folk groups around the settle, big, thrashy, noisy 'cool' bands in the stable/shed. the beer festivals, the adnams ale and me and my family welcoming everyone into our home, the Kings Head.

Many Pleasant Evenings

The low house was run by a lovely couple named Paul and Janet Parsons. The had a son Zach (Zacky Bongo) and a daughter, Tabitha. What a pleasant atmosphere they always maintained. Friends like the Parsons are rare and sadly I do not know where they are now. We were only a stones throw away in St. Mary's cottage. The only seperation from the pub was a very small garden and an equally small garage. I hope all is well with my long lost friends from Laxfield.
