My Childhood

This picture reminds me of the time when a petrol tanker careered down Wakefield Road and crashed into the side entrance of the town hall. This road (pictured) was closed off for a day while the fire brigade dealt with the crash. I can remember the fire brigade telling me off for standing at the bottom, looking up at the crash as there was petrol running down the road into the town centre. I will post other memories later. Keep looking!

RE: RE: My Childhood

As a child we used to go from a railway station near the town hall to the seaside, I think it cost about 2 shillings and 6 pence for the day. I also was near the post office at the bottom of Leeds Road when a bomb dropped just up Wakefield Road and killed the people inside a warden's post. I was on my way to work at Thornhill no 1 signal box at the time and it blew out the windows. I heard it whistling down. My family and i left for south Australia in 1963. Does anyone remember these? Cyril Cunningham, south Australia. PS: I was born at Walker Street, Earlsheaton on September 30th 1924. Kind regards to all!

RE: RE: My Childhood

Did the tanker accident not get the Town Hall building condemned as a place of work as a result of the structural damage to same ? Or am I more senile than I thought ?

RE: RE: My Childhood

I got told by my dad that a stray bomb exploded near Dewsbury town hall and left a rather large crater. Is this true?
