My Antelope Memories
I lived in Dowlais Top in the late 1970s in the Antelope Hotel. My father's name is Curly and my mother's name is Maureen. I have lovely memories of the Antelope, I remember Hadyn Pups, Dai Stewart, Doris Phelps who owned the local shop, many happy hours were spent there. We had sales on a Sunday morning selling anything and everything. My parents are both still alive and now live in Ynysddu but we talk often about the Antelope. My best friend Sharon, her parents Jean and Crad, I have lovely happy mamories of them all. Going to Tyffini's on a Saturday night was the highlight of my week, they were very happy times for me, times I have never forgotten.

Caeharris Pics - 1881 Census
I've been researching my family tree now for a few years and I'm obsessed. I would like to find an image of any sort for the Caeharris area during 1800s. My great-great-grandparents (according to the 1881 census) lived at 29 Cwm Canol Street, Caeharris, Merthyr Tydfil. I've googled the address but to no avail, so any pics of the area would be appreciated. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas.
Walks to Morlais
I was about 14 and my friend Alan Davies and I used to walk from Twynyrodyn on a Sunday morning to Morlais Castle. There we would wonder and speculate about its history and what battles were fought there. How many people died and on what spot. Were we standing on a patch of ground that had seen blood and gore?
That was a glorious summer in Merthyr as I remember it.
Bontnewtdd Hotel Trelewis
My Great Great grandfather used to manage or own this hotel in 1911. His name was John Green and his wife was Elizabeth Green, my great grandmother, (their daughter) was Verena Green. If anybody has any information on them I would love to hear it.
Carno Bridge Rhymney
I used to live in Carno Street, and actually watched the bridge being taken down. Made the corner to the Barracks level safer I suppose!!! Another bit of history pulled down. Ann
Gypsy Castle Near Carno Bridge, Rhymney
My mother and her brother were born at Gypsy Castle. The family had lived there for many years and we have photos of haymaking in the 1930s etc. There were several houses standing at the time, in a group (5?). Only 2 remain, I believe. My g-grandfather Rees kept a smallholding as well as working at the colliery. My grandfather kept hens as well as working at the colliery as an electrician, and they had a milk and eggs round in Dowlais etc. They went to chapel in Pantywaun where my grandfather was secretary.
My grandparents moved to Pembrokeshire in 1939 and I have always been interested to learn more about my roots in the Dowlais/Rhymney Bridge area. Does anyone remember the Rees family at Gypsy Castle? I would be grateful for any kind of information.
JAZZ BAND
Oh those memories of our jazz band, they were the best days of my life. I lived for a Saturday. My mam would pack our picnic and we'd be off in our orange and blue bus, Ronnie and Ann Marks sorting us all out with our American tan tights. I'seen places I never would have if it weren't for the band. Tuesday and Thurs band practice, it took us kids off the streets, it was my life ! Maxine Phillips
