Wide Sea Hotel, Downderry

I last stayed at the Wide Sea Hotel in 1966. Margaret Eliott the owner was to marry my father, Hilton Devitte in 1967. I wondered if the hotel still existed today, and what had happened to Margaret Devitte nee Eliott. We also had wonderful holidays at Whitsand Bay Hotel in the 1950s as a family and I was glad to see that it is still there, and hope to re-visit it one year. I live in Vancouver, Canada now.  I hope someone can reply to this letter?

RE: RE: Wide Sea Hotel, Downderry

The Widesea Hotel became a nursing home in the 1980's before being turned into luxury apartments recently. The picture accompanying your letter is of the former Seaview Hotel now known as The Inn on the Shore. I am returning to Downderry in a few days time after 13 years away from this magical seaside village. I am staying at The Inn on the Shore along with my wife who has never been to Downderry before. I spent numerous summer holidays in Downderry in the 1980's and 1990's staying at a guest house called Eddystone Cottage. You mentioned The Whitsand Bay Hotel, which is actually in Portwrinkle just up the coast from Downderry. There is a great little golf course there with stunning sea views!!!
