A castle at Dudley is first mentioned following the arrival of 'a great and powerful prince of the Kingdom of Mercia' called Dudd, Dodo or Dudo c700. It is said that he 'raised a strong fortress here, which remained until the Conquest.' The keep, seen here above one of the later zoo enclosures, is believed to be the oldest substantive part of the castle, with the exception of fragments of walling in the gatehouse, which can be seen to the right.
