Douglas Scott

I wonder if someone can let me know the name of the man featured on the statue at the crossroads outside the hotel.  I do remember that one of his names was repeated and seem to remember that it was .... Montague-Douglas-Scott.  Who was he?

I used to pass that way on my way to and from Rugby High School on the 589 in the 1950s.

RE: RE: Douglas Scott

His name was Lord John Douglas Montague Douglas Scott. His statue is there because he stopped the railway station being built in Dunchurch. So they put in Rugby. Dunchurch railway station was built two miles away on the A45 London to Birmingham Road. I do have a photoe of it with my mates sitting by it back in 1958.

RE: RE: Douglas Scott

I have a photo taken of the statue during the First World War by my grandfather, showing that it was then surrounded by extensive iron railings. The photo also shows the local bobby in uniform with large badge and whistle-chain, but it is too far away to see his number. The statue is always dressed up by "mysterious village pranksters" every New Year, and at the moment is wearing a woolly scarf.
