Lawmuir Agricultural School
I went to Lawmuir for 2 years from 1963 - 1965 when I was 12. I am now 58. Every Monday morning the bus would pick you up at one of the statues in George Square directly across from the Post Office Building and take all the boys out to Jackton. The first day I arrived I was homesick but then settled down. I enjoyed being there. It was correct that every room had to take a chance of getting up at 5:00am to milk the cows, that I regretted, the food was good and we all enjoyed ourselves at night, the teachers put on a film night which was every Monday, and Thursday night was swimming night, you were taken to baths at St Margaret Marys pool in Castlemilk and spent a couple of hours there and were brought back. Most nights they put on something to keep us happy, during the day some of us were working out on the land and the others were in the classroom and this rotated. Now that I stay in East Kilbride not far away, I did visit the grounds after the "Bad Boys School" closed and some of the buildings were still there, it is now a Police College, as EK is all built up now some of the old farm tracks are still there.
After I left the school I went to work on a poultry farm (this is what I wished to study) in Dalry and gave it up after spending 2 weeks there.
The teachers were Mr Austin, Mr Lamont, Mr McInroe (Islay Teacher), Mr Kerr and the head teacher Mr Smith who stayed in the big house on the drive.
I wish I was still there to this day, I really enjoyed my stay there. If you remember me and would like to contact me please email me at wilforwat77@aol.com.

RE: RE: Lawmuir Agricultural School
I was perhaps the first student nominated to attend Lawmuir Agricultural College when it was being organised in 1948. Mr Hutton, a science teacher at Queen's Park Senior Secondary School, had taken a personal interest in me. When the new school was proposed in 1947 and it appeared likely he would become the headmaster, he invited me and my parents to visit the property (driving us there in his new Ford car!). Plans were being made for Lawmuir house to be renovated and modified for use as the school's main building - and I remember being horrified when I learned the heraldic decoration in the hallway was to be painted over!.
Chapter 4 of my recently published book, RETIRED TERRORIST, tells of the school and my experiences there at some length - including a wee adventure at Miss Ironside's shop in Jackton (it is curious that - although many of we students were there with plans to emigrate to take up farm work in Australasia, I would not take up an agriculture-related job in New Zealand until 1980!); I was invalided out of the school in 1950 with rheumatic fever. An outline of the book (and information about its purchase) is available at www.gordonmcshean.com.
In 1979, visiting from my home in California, I made a brief return visit to the school property and was extremely disappointed to discover that those in charge of its new functions (reforming delinquent youths, I believe) knew little or nothing of its earlier use.
I have many fond memories of the school and the surrounding countryside (I walked Mr Hutton two wee dogs as an excuse to got off "campus"). Get in touch and help keep memories of the old Lawmuir alive.
