Drayton Junior School Ealing.

A Memory of Ealing.

Hi my name is Geraldine.I went to Drayton junior school .Ealing.approx 1972/3.I had a great time there.I lived at St Leonards rd then.Iremember having great fun with my friends Sharon,Jane,Juanita,Mark,.Michael and George.Sharon emigrated to Guyana.I remember Mrs Knight who everyone feared! The highlight was when we went on a school trip to St Mary's Bay in Kent.

Shortly after that,we moved to Claygate road Northfields.I remember some local shops such as:Richardson the butchers.Budgens.and the lovely fish and chip shop on the corner of Northfield Avenue. Later on I went to Gregg Grammar School.Mattock lane.It was misery! The building itself was quite run down then and there were a few crazy teachers(though not all) One.In particular, who kept on randomly attacking pupils' because he imagined he was in the war! That would never have been allowed today.Thank God!)
I can remember day dreaming out of the top window of the class room trying to think of ways to escape from that school and what I would do when I left e.t.c.quite depressing really.
The school didn't provide school dinners so we all bought our lunch at Woolworths. They did lovely pasties and soup which we bought for 25p.We all then checked the record chart to see who reached no.1.
A group of us went to Bentalls dept.store.and for a laugh we took wigs off of all the mannequins and threw them at each other across the shop.we thought it was hilarious!
My friend.and I joined the St John's Ambulance cadets Ealing division. This was great .Both my friend and I were asked to go 'on duty' at the Bentalls store to give a demonstration to the public showing them how to do c.p.r .My friend. decided to lay this life size doll on the floor and pretend to French kiss the doll! Needless to say we weren't asked back.Funny though.

40 plus years on I went back to visit.Ealing Broadway changed beyond recognition(.I remember
having a saturday job at the Hi -tide fish shop opposite the station and before that at Safeways before it was a shopping centre)Gregg Grammar was no longer. but is now a boys school .Walpole park hadn't Changed that much.I can finally look back at all this and laugh now!

Hi, Geraldine.
I attended Gregg for a few terms in the early/mid '70's. It was a fairly run down place, as you said. I went there because my mum moved in with her sister in Wimbledon, & Irene Nichols(Aunt) taught typing & shorthand on the business side at Gregg.
Can't recall any mad teachers. Mr Scott was the Head, his claim to fame being he was a neighbour of Engelbert Humperdinck. There was a Miss Gash, who taught Spanish, & an Asian man who (I think) taught Maths/Physics. But his English was not very good. Don't think he lasted long.
I was the goalkeeper for the 2nd team, Mr Scott's son was the Head Boy & 'keeper for the 1st team. Can't remember who the Games teacher was, but think he got punched by a boy who was leaving!
I recall nearly the whole school being given 100 lines for not coming in when it was raining at lunchtime.
