Nostalgic memories of Ealing's local history

Share your own memories of Ealing and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Worked at Clifton House in the 1970's, it was a few doors down from Police Station, probably where that crane is working, it was Legal & Generals "Golden Mile" (they prob owned office buildings) Clifton House was I suppose name of old house that was pulled down to make way for new office block. Remember Victoria Arms , Walpole Library, walking in park dinnertimes and Daniels in W Ealing.
We moved to Ealing when I was 5 and at 11 I went to NHEHS and we bought the school uniform at Abernethies on the corner of Uxbridge Rd. I loved that area. Next to the taxi rank there was a Polish deli...oh the baked sultana cheesecake. In Uxbridge Rd towards Sanders there was Fullers cake shop, walnut cake there! The Caprice coffee bar was out of bounds for me but my brother went. Opposite there was briefly a donut ...see more

In the 1950's I used to go here with my brothers. We tried sailing paper boats. The swans were quite aggressive if you got too close to their cygnets. One time I got too adventurous and stepped down the slope, slid on the algae and ended up drenched. I had to walk back to South Ealing Road squelching and feeling very sorry for myself. I visited again in 2011 and was interested to see it much the same. The ...see more

As a child, I lived at 24 Sunnyside Road Ealing W5 not far from Ealing Studios, from when I was born at the start of the war in1938 until I was 16 and my parents moved to Harrow on the Hill. I went to Hamilton House Preparatory school in Florence Road from 1945 until 1949. It was situated in a large Victorian house and was presided over by the headmaster AG Phillips. In those days corporal punishment ...see more
During the mid 70's I attended the above school for a few terms. It was half a normal school, and also had a secretarial section that taught Gregg shorthand & touch typing. My aunt taught the secretarial students. I commuted in from Raynes Park, first by bus, then by train. It was near to the Ealing Broadway underground station. On the school side Mr Scott was the headmaster. He claimed to be a neighbour of ...see more
Does anyone remember Morris Bros, Gents' Outfitters - I THINK must have been in Ealing High Street. I worked there for three summers in the early 70s, walking over from my sister's house in Mayfield Avenue. Mr Morris himself (I suppose a surviving younger bro, like "young" Mr Grace in Are You Being Served) I remember as a slight, fussy man with a pink complexion and a carefully coiffed bush of dyed (I'd now guess, though it ...see more
