Willingham - Haydens

My nan was born a Hayden in London, her father Levi and his ancestors go back in the village to the 1500s. Nan and grandad - Emma and Henry (Harry) Welsh - lived at Ivy Cottage, 30 Church Street in their twilight years and are buried in the churchyard. Nan once said she was related to the whole village. I am researching the family tree, and I must admit that many family lines do entwine!

Earith Was in Huntingdonshire (and Still Is!)

I was born in St Ives in 1939 but lived in Earith at what is now number 43. Next door was my Grandad's grocer's shop - Bert Russell. I moved to Peterborough in 1958 where I still live. I could write a lot about Earith - must find the time. Earith was a good place to live - we had a main road, a good river for fishing and lots of characters, like Bill Hinkins, the coalman; Mr Pledger the High Street Farmer and Stan Doe, the keeper of pigs in the High Street. Lou Barnes was a great character - he collected scrap - he had some ducks on the river. Mr Armes was the landlord of The Crown and Albert Maile had the garage and Riverview Hotel in the High Street. He had an old Lanchester car. Eric Hard had the farm near the Hermitage - oh I could go on - its history which must not be lost.

1960-Yanks Invade Earith

In 1960 my father returned to England with the US Air Force, stationed in Alconbury. This was the first time he'd seen England again, having been shot down after taking off on a bombing mission in Germany, originating from a base in Bury St. Edmonds in 1943. He was a POW that escaped into France in 1944. In 1960 I was age 11 living with my parents in a 3 story brick home on High Street in Earith that was owned and leased to my family by retired RAF Wing Commander Pitt. The home backed to the river Ouse. I remember a small courtyard at the front of the home. There was a custom boatworks down the street to the right just past a phone booth and it seemed there was a lumber yard directly adjacent to the home to the left leaving out the front door. I guess my dad felt we were strategically located across the street and in very close proximity to The George & Dragon. My... Read more

School Master's House, High Street

Anyone living in Earith before 1970 will know my name, not because of me, but through my father, Don Guymer, and my mother Beryl.  Dad was known because of the haulage firm he used to run out of the house in the High Street.

What I would dearly love is to find some photos of the house as it used to be, not as it is now, a bungalow. If there is ANYONE who has any pics of the OLD SCHOOLMASTER'S HOUSE,  PEMBROOKE HOUSE in Earith, I would be gratefull for a copy of the pics, photocopy, scanned copy, I don't mind.

I was born in the house in 1961, one of the last I think to be born in the village. I lived there up until I was 18, then off I went to the army, returning after I had done my time. I now live in St Ives, but often think back to what the old house would be like now.

If anyone can help... Read more

Earith, Cook's Drove

Hi, my husband, Tony, was born in Cooks Drove, Earith, in the actual house that's still there to this day. After a year there he moved to St Ives but we now live in Bluntisham.
All his sisters were born in Earith and his dad used to bike to over railway crossing where he worked as the guardsman and crossing guard. But when we moved to St Ives his dad worked for the then St Ives borough council. His dad's name was Ernie Simons, and I wondered if anyone remembers him.

Childhood Memories

I was born in Earith High St. at a place called 'The Laurels', long gone I think. I went to school at Earith VC and the head teacher was Mr. Harrison (Pip). My mother kept the Crown pub for a long time and before that the George and Dragon. I would like to hear if anyone is running a web site as I have lots of old pictures I would like to share.

Memories of Cambridgeshire

Evacuees

I was evacuated to Bluntisham from south London and stayed with the Reverend Kirby (Minister of the Chapel) and his wife and daughter Patricia.
I used to attend the Chapel regularly. I remember it well and they were very kind to me.

I Was A Dr Banardo's Boy

I was a Dr Banardo's boy. I was with Mrs F Ashton for about 3 yrs, at the homestead, which I think has since gone, it was an old pub. I had very happy memories of Bluntisham, if there is anyone who remembers me, I would like to hear from you.
Our head teacher was Mrs Xmas.
Just if I may mention a few names I remember, Richard Tebbitt, Richard Leader, Ales Boulter, Leonard Marsh, Grace Barker, Joy Tebbitt, Sybil Merryweather, Allen Abbott.
I did enjoy living in Bluntisham, so if anyone remembers let me hear from you.

I Was A Barnardoe's Boy

I have received a dud email from a Gavin Ashton, please get in contact again, I would like to hear from you.
Irwin Parker
Also I am looking for a reply from others.

From The Barnardo Boy in Bluntisham

I would love to hear from Sybil Merryweather's daughter, I don't know what happened, I did answer you, and any others who remember that time.
Irwin Parker.

Family

I was in a home called Hill View in Andover/Winchester. I first met my brothers Richard and Nigel at this home when I was six years old. I remember a girl called Laura who received a birthday card from her mother when she was 15 years old. My brothers were and are so very important as they told me I belonged to other people. I always ended uo going to bed after school as I was at times in trouble for being naughty. I attended Brownie's and the school fence was next door to the home. We had a great big black rocking horse that was attached to the ground and swings in the garden. We had people comeevery Sunday to take my brothers and I to church. Chrstmas trees always seemed so big then as I was then so little. I am now a social worker and believe children are oh so special as auntie Gwen looked after us all so well and told us we were all so... Read more
