The Swimming Pool c1955

My uncle, Arnold Spencer, was the superintendant at the pool for many years. His wife Gladys used to make hot drinks of Oxo to sell to the children. He retired when they built the new pool at Fleming Park. He is sadly now in Residential Care in Dovercout, Essex. He loved his time at the pool. Does anyone remember him?

RE: RE: Swimming Pool

I remember "Arnold" (as we all called him) well, a big daunting man who at the slightest sign of mischief or distress would fish you out of the pool with an enormous hooked pole. He's one of those key characters from childhood who I'm sure is fondly recalled by many of us who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s,so sad to hear he is now in residential care. I also remember the hot drink although I thought it was Bovril, but hey, whatever it was, you needed it after a swim at Bishy pool, it was freezing, I remember 62F being a regular and significant temperature, not helped by the fact the pool leaked and the fill pipe was constantly gushing cold water into the pool. Anyone who had a swim there usually went home with a souvenir too...pin pricks on each toe from the rough concrete! I wouldn't have swapped those years swimming in that pool for an indoor pool though, 1975 and 1976 being particularly memorable for the long hot summers.

RE: RE: Swimming Pool

Halcyon days for me in the late 60's and early 70's. How I wish I could turn back the clock to be going to that pool again and seeing Arnold and his wife. They were a terrific couple.

It's now a car showroom. Why couldn't they have just put a roof over that swimming pool?

RE: RE: Swimming Pool

I enjoyed many days by the pool - in it, the grass at the top in front of the Boys club. I was 8 years old at the time - now in Australia. Good old oxo.
