Ebbw Vale did not begin to take shape until the 1860s. Before this date there were three separate industrial settlements, Beaufort in the north, Ebbw Vale in the centre, and Victoria in the south. Each community was distinct, with its own sense of identity. The air here, once so dense with the smoke of the ironworks, is now crisp and clear.

I’m researching my family tree, and have discovered that my great grandfather was John Barber , he was a trustee of the work house in Ebbw Vale, and, as a boy in Ebbw Vale my Dad remembers seeing a statue of him up on top of a building... can anyone out there tell me anything about him, his family, the work house, and where the statue is now? Any info would be gratefully accepted .
My Gran owned a corner shop 1960-1970's in Ebbw Vale. I believe is it now a power station for National Grid. I would love more information about this shop.

I have lots of family from the Ebbw Vale area on both sides of the family (particularly my mother's). But one of the memories stands out above the rest. I can remember my grandmother - Winifred Jones (nee Harding) telling me about her Grandmother owning a sweet shop in Waunllwyd in the 1920's and 1930's where she would go to skyve off school lol.
