First Pop Concert

Broadway Cinema c1955

I was 11 years old and allowed to attend a pop concert at the Broadway. Top billing was The Kinks supported by Gene Pitney and Marrianne Faithfull. My memory tells me that it was The ABC; Broadway being the name of the main shopping street. Wonderful memory.

RE: RE: First Pop Concert

Hi Craig, Just watched the 'Top of the Pops' special last night and saw the Kinks. So I came on t'internet to see the Broadway and remember the night I saw the Kinks there and Marianne Faithfull. I think the Troggs also...No one believes me when I say I saw them at the old Broadway. I went to Winton Senior School and I'm sure I was 11 as well.

RE: RE: First Pop Concert

Hi Craig and Alan. Was only telling my music teacher three days ago about attending this concert. (He is much younger than me but loves the Kinks!). It was definitely the Kinks, Gene Pitney and Marianne Faithfull. Could have been around 1964 when I was 16. I lived in Swinton at the time.

RE: RE: First Pop Concert

I went to the Broadway every Saturday afternoon, I lived in Clegg Street behind the Broadway and later Brook House. I went to Eccles Parish then Winton Senior. I went to the pop concert you're talking about, the Kinks, Gene Pitney, Gerry and the Pacemmakers, Marianne Faithfull and someone called Bobby Shaftoe were the acts. Five shillings, seven and six and ten shillings were the price to get in, I think my lolly was 6 pence. I loved the Broadway on a Saturday afternoon with Flash Gordon and the Clay Men, and Hopolong Cassidy. If it was your birthday you went onto the stage and got a free ticket for the following week, some children tried to have a birthday every week.
