1951 Festival Of Britain

A Memory of Edge Hill.

How many of us remember the Festival of Britain as I have said my mother had just opened the shop when this celebration was going to take place. All the houses in the street began making trelises to go round the door these were to be decorated with paper roses interwoven, bunting was stretched across the street two things stand out about this other than the street party was that out of the upstairs window my father and uncle had made the festival of Britain sign which was four point star with Britanias head at the top we were putting lights round it and I put my finger in the socket and gave myself one almighty shock,The other being that we had built a trelise right across the end of the street with guy ropes stretched across Speakland road high enough to miss any traffic that was likely to come down the road exept for a double decker bus going the wrong way bouncing over the cobbles it caught the ropes and down the whole lot went there was a lot of irate residents legging it after the bus I cannot remember if they ever put it back up. We then saved every thing for the Coronation two years later.
