The Wards, Elgin

My grandfather, Robert (Bob) and his wife, Margaret (Maggie) Stewart/Stuart, along with their two children, lived at The Wards, Elgin, about 1900. Robert was employed at the railway station there. A third child, James Urquhart, was born at The Wards, 6th October 1900.

I remember growing up in Elgin (Bishopmill). All my family have passed on now, but I still visit as often as I can, each time I go there I feel a bolt of pride as I walk down the High Street, happy days.

Memories of Morayshire

The Main Household

Watching my uncle making a lobster creel wow! never seen anything like it. The house was a large detached white house over looking Hopeman Harbour I think!.
My mother and sister and brothers lived there throughout their childhood. My mother married Norman whom at the time of their meeting was in the Fleet Air Arm in Lossiemouth. Following their marriage they came down to Portsmouth in 1952 I think and we have lived here in Gosport ever since.
During my childhood we visited the family a few times in Hopeman and my mother still has links with her nieces and nephews Margaret, Ethel and Jimmy. I just remember the hill and the harbour where my uncle David owned the Christine and we still have some photographs. Hopefully one day we will meet up again, you never know.

Davitee;

Well, Your uncle that made the lobster creels was a well known local man called David, he was know as Davitee, and yes his house was a large house where he lived and kept his lobsters in his bath when he caught them. He was a great man, and a friend. His family are stll there, Jimmy Simmers, Ethel and Margret. David (his posh name) would go out in all weather, and as a result was lost at sea on Christmas Day I think. They just don't make people like him any more. John Main Friend of Jimmy Simmers (nephew of David).

STATION HOUSE, HOPEMAN

Mine is not a memory but a request for information or old photos. I live in Station House (the old Station Masters house) and have only been able to find 1, unclear, photo of the house.

I would love to know of the previous residents here and photos.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AT GRANNY JANE'S

My memories of Rothes are of spending wonderful holidays staying with my Granny at the Crudens in Rothes. I went every school holiday for many years. I loved my Granny and Auntie Greta, but adored my Aunty Nellie who took me everywhere with her. She worked at Simpsons Bakery and at 6 o'clock in the morning, I would be perched on the handle bars of her bike, whizzing up Green St.(No health and safety then) Mr Simpson the boss, always handed me a brown envelope with a shiny half crown in it for my wages.

Another fond memory is of helping out at the farm accross from Granny's house. Along with pals, I would be balanced on top of hay trailers and ricks. Little mice and other beesties running around my feet.(Wouldn't be so brave now) Funny! I always remember eating our lunch 'pieces' sitting in gloreous sunshine. A childs rose tinted glasses must be responsible for that.

Mulben Station 1901-1909

My grandfather, Robert Urquhart, was a Signalman/ Porter, employed by the Highland Railway. He had served at Forres and Elgin before transferring to Mulben, about 1901. Robert (Bob) and wife Margaret (Maggie) already had three children in 1901; however their brood increased by another three bairns during their occupancy of Mulben Station.
The Urquhart family's next move was to a house named 'Calternach', still in Mulben. The family occupied that house from about 1909 to about 1915, during which time another three children were born. Robert Urquhart had left his railway job in about 1909 and was subsequently employed by Glentauchers Distillery as a Maltman.
