The Bakery

Station Road c1955

My wife Margaret and myself started a bakery and shop in part of what had been 'The Manchester House'. We had a small gas oven, a 10 qt mixer and a pie blocker and that was about it! One Easter we made 500 hot cross buns in that small domestic oven and sold them very quickly. There was so much steam coming from the oven that the wallpaper in the room upstairs fell off the wall! In about 1970 we partnered with my brother Glyn and his wife Pat and opened THE BAKERY in Underwood Drive Whitby.
The Canal Tavern was a favourite place for an after-work drink with my brothers Glyn and Paul. Glyn and I emigrated to New Zealand in 1973, Paul stayed in 'The Port'. Margaret and I opened a bakery here in Woodville, New Zealand 25 years ago and still going strong.
Does anyone remember buying pies or cakes from the Station Road or Underwood drive Bakeries?

RE: RE: The Bakery

Just another memory of 'the Port'. Before starting my own bakery I also worked at 'Patiserie Anglais' and also Adams Bakery, Chester Road, Whitby, and also night work at 'Wough & Foulks' (hope I spelt that right!) - they bought our bakery in Underwood Drive when we emigrated to New Zealand. Just a memory from childhood, I went to Cubs and Scouts at the 5th E.P.Troop. The 'Skip' was Mike Pagan. Any other 5th. E.P-ers out there?

RE: RE: The Bakery

Hi Ian,
I don't know whether you remember me, Sandra Crump ( and also my best friend, Ann Wellsbury, who is sitting with me as I write this from Houston, Tx.) We all went to Milton Rd. Primary School from1951-59. We remember Paul & Glyn and we certainly remember all the cake shops you mentioned. We seem to recall that you lived in the Winchester Ave. area of Wolverham.
I also seem to recall having a conversation with either you or Glyn when we lived in New Plymouth N.Z. We left there 17 yrs. ago and came to the USA.
Regards,
Sandy (Crump) Dawson & Ann (Wellsbury) Griffiths
