Stumbled On This Site About My Old Hometown

A Memory of Eltham.

Great to read the comments about Eltham. Probably I'm just a whipper snapper by comparison but I lived in Eltham from the early 60's to mid 70's. Lived in Greenway, and often would walk up to the High Street, or maybe take the number 21 bus in bad weather! Fond memories of Haimo Rd School (maybe not for the teachers). Eltham Swimming baths for school swimming lessons that were always freezing with the foot troughs. Used to fill up my motorbike at Clifton's garage next to the church. I too remember Showell' toy shop (lots of good quality toys). Also Burton's the tailor on the corner, with the doorway next to it leading to an old style barber's shop. The Greyhound, the Carpenter's Arms and the Rising Sun pubs to name but a few watering holes. Hinds of Eltham the department store where my parents got a three piece suite on tick. The Arcade half way up the high street on the right I seem to remember had a draper/hardware shop that had all sorts of stuff for sale - bit of a bazaar - can't remember it's name. Also the Yorkshire Grey pub - which I'm told is now a Mc Donalds. Remember as a kid being sent around to the Co-Op in Westhorne Avenue to get the odd bits of shopping by my Mum and then going to Shaw's sweet shop to spend pocket money. Seems weird now - since migrating to Oz.
