Baron of Beef
My Dad did his National Service at RAF Ely Hospital in 1953/4. We held a reunion at the weekend (27th Sept 08) in the Lamb Hotel which was attended by about 27 people. The Baron of Beef, the Rifleman's (on Lyn Road), the Cutter and the Minster were their favoured pubs. I would love to obtain photos from the 1950s especially of the Baron of Beef, which was at 13 Fore Hill. I understand its license was surrendered in 1958 when it closed. The property was demolished and rebuilt. It is now a children's clothes/toy shop. If there are any photos of this period out there we would love to see them. Many thanks. Regards, Carol Greig

RE: RE: Baron of Beef
I was at RAF Hospital Ely 1953/55 with Carol's dad Norrie Greig and others including Tony Rumble, Daddy Done, Jo Chell and Jean Marshall [MT section, my wife of many years] and others.
If there is anyone out there who was stationed at Ely in the early 1950s please get in touch.

Joe Warner

RE: RE: Baron of Beef
I was at Ely Hospital 1954 57, I was a cook in the airmen's mess, with Paddy Harshaw and Tommy Moore. Later I was Corporal in the hospital kitchen. I remember all the pubs Carol mentions, The Baron Of Beef was very popular with the American servicemen from Lakenheath, so to a certain extent it was avoided by us RAF bods. However there were certain WRAFs who preferred the company of our American friends. Sorry, Joe Warner, I don't remember you by name or the others, but I must have served your meals many times. Other cooks were Pete Chaloner, Bob Smith, Paddy O'Driscoll, Cyril George, and Pete Howitt. I remember the Saturday night dance at the Corn Exchange.
