My Early Life.

I was born in 6 Milton Road, Egham on 13-05-1947 and we shortly moved to 9 Almond Close, Englefield Green. I first attended school at St Jude's infants in 1952, Mrs Searl was head, one of my earliest memories is of my Dad collecting me at the gate and taking me to see 'Gunfight at the OK Corral'. My next school was St Jude's junior (next door) where Mr Frome was head, other teachers I remember from there are Mr Pike, Mr Leigh, Mr Smith, Miss Robinson (she got married while I was in her class). My friends in those days where Paul Wagg, John Brian, Derek Keith, Desmond Jenner (he unfortunately drowned in the Thames at old Windsor), Mick Bunyan and Colin Payne, to name some of several. I fluncked the 11 plus (probably on purpose to stay with my friends!). Next was Egham County Secondary School in Manorcroft Road, Egham, Mr Glyn Price was head. I especially remember David Coleman as an inspirational teacher. I left school in 1962 and worked at Johnson & Clarks for several years. I would like to hear from anyone who has memories of me.

RE: RE: My Early Life.

Dear David,
My son found your interesting message and forwarded it to me. I was intrigued for two reasons. Mrs Searle taught me at Station Road school when I was seven years old before she moved to Englefield Green. Stuart Froome was a near neighbour of my family in Egham. He kindly visited my father from time to time during the last few weeks of his life. My two years of teaching at Egham County Secondary School were very happy. I have precious memories and photographs of my first classes there. Two of my greatest friends in life, Ivan Smith and John Melvin (sadly no longer with us) I first met at the school. I remember Glynn Price very well. He was very kind to me as was Miss Gumbley, with whom I actually shared a class room. Looking back I probably made a great mistake in leaving Egham. Later on I had four good years at a secondary modern school in Newport Pagnell before spending the rest of my teaching career with special needs children in the Seaford area, where I still live with my family. Every good wish, David Coleman.

RE: RE: My Early Life.

I too have been trying to find out what has happened to the people I went to school with. My name was Penny Adler (now Hall). I attended Egham Secondary from 1959 to 1963. I remember the geography teacher Mr Parrot, the library teacher, Miss Lyster, music, John Melvin (he was my favourite and we had a lot of happy times). I took part in the performance of 'The Mikado' and other productions but only in the chorus. I too had Glynn Price as my headmaster. Some of the names I remember are as follows: Lesley Izod, Carolyn Angell, Barry Gingell, Brian Chard, Stuart Pottinger. Unfortunately my memory isn't so good at the moment as I am on medication for breast cancer which seems to take its toll. I lived in Spring Avenue, Egham. My family left for Australia in 1966. I now live in Pearcedale, Victoria and am the only surviving member of my family. I would dearly love to know what has happened to my school friends (even if my memory does need jogging). Best Wishes from Penny Hall (Australia).

RE: RE: My Early Life.

Do not know how I can across your site except doing a couple of random searches on my father's family. I was born after Desmond drowned but I am his cousin. His older brother Hugh and I are in touch but as I was born and raised in the states and being unfamiliar with their time in Englefield Green we never have spoken of those days. I know something of this time from my father but still very little. If you knew Desmond you must have had occasion to meet my Aunt Erin who passed away 2 years ago. It is sometimes a bit odd coming across family connections and references on the internet when there is no reason to know people otherwise.

Kind regards,

Barbara Massy Bear

RE: RE: My Early Life.

I lived in Englefield Green from 1948 to 1968 (the date of my first marriage) and lived in Bond Street. I was known as Gilly Barr then, and have since married a local boy who lived down on the Schroeder estate, where his father was head gardener. I went to St Jude's for 2 brief years, having gone to St Peter's in Old Windsor for most of my childhood as my mother taught there, and I was taught by Mr Leech and Mr Sincross (I think that's their names, but it was a very long time ago) and then went to the dreaded Willy Perks, a school of loathsome memory. I went to the Englefield Green Methodist Church youth club, that was run by David Coleman who taught at Manorcroft, and was a lovely man. Gilly Meakins (nee Barr)
