Escrick Park Gardens - Market Gardens - 1950 - 1966

My aunt and uncle - Mr and Mrs George Pratt - used to manage the market gardens in Escrick. We had many happy holidays there, and I remember the peaches and apricots growing up the wall, rows and rows of runner beans, greenhouses full of tomatoes and cucumbers etc. They lived in the large house (it could have been a tied or rented house with the job) with 7 of my cousins, who used to work for their father.
My earliest memory is going up on the train and alighting at a small level crossing 'somewhere' (it may have been Saltmarsh) and my grandmother (the only time I remember seeing her) meeting us with other family members. At that time they all lived and worked at Saltmarsh. I still have relatives in the area around York and Wheldrake etc. My grandmother Hannah Richardson nee Gamwell is buried in St Helen's Churchyard, Escrick.
My surname before marriage was Richardson, I can trace my family tree back to 1605 and Mathew Brunyee, who was imprisoned in York for a few days in 1647 (in the building now known as Cliffords Tower). He lived at Scalme Park, Wistow, near Selby.

I also remember the girls from the school next to the market gardens coming by the house with their cloaks on and I think they were wearing clogs! - but cannot be 100% sure. There were large wrought iron gates to the estate. I can picture cricket being played on the green there, and my cousin Don Pratt taught me to ride a bicycle on the path along the large herbaceous border within the market gardens.

My aunt was a very good cook and used to bake pies and cakes and jugged hare! Their house seemed massive to us small young children and the dining room had a large range in it. There were 5 of us, Mum, Dad, my sister Trixie and us twins going there for holidays, so, along with my aunt and uncle and cousins there was always a large meal for my aunt to cook.

Happy Memories.

RE: RE: Escrick Park Gardens - Market Gardens - 1950 - 1966

I found your recollections on Escrick interesting. Thank you. I visited my great great uncle George Davison in Main Street ,Escrick in 1967 and visited the house again in 1973 and 1988. It is the birthplace of my great grandfather Robert William Colley (1879-1967). His parents, Robinson and Hannah COLLEY and 12 siblings lived there from about 1877 onwards. Hannah is buiried in St Helens. Uncle George & Winnie (nee Colley) Davison adopted Rosemary Davison about 1944 and sadly we have lost contact many years ago. I hope she reads this, would love to chat.
Best wishes

RE: RE: Escrick Park Gardens - Market Gardens - 1950 - 1966

In 2004 I had the occasion to visit the house that my sister Shirley Spann writes about. My husband, my sister Hilary and myself were there to attend a 60th birthday for cousin Ken Richardson who resides in Escrick. Along with another cousin Sarita Thompson, nee Pratt. We three girls took a walk inside the park gates once more to look at the house, it was still covered in ivy and flowers and looked a picture for sore eyes. Inside the window sat a young girl who invited us inside to take a look around, after we told her that it was a place of happy memories and the home of Sarita in past years. It had been changed considerably. No signs of the gardens, or the large dining area where we had our meals, or the wash house or walk in pantry. At the top of the stairs where we were once able to go either right or left we were unable to go right as it had been bricked over. The house now was home to girls from the Private Girls School inside the park as it was years ago. It was a lovely memorable thing to do and knowing I won't go that way again I am pleased we did so that evening in July 2004. I am far removed from all that now living in Australia with my own family. I also have fond memories of our Aunt and Uncle and their family and still keep in touch with Sarita and a few members of the Richardson clan who still live in and around the York area.
