Swatton Family in Collingbourne Ducis
In the 1800s my gt gt gt grandparents lived in Collingbourne Ducis, house numbers 5, 21, 71, 53, according to the booklet 'Memories of C. D'. My grandfather John Swatton b.1871, d.1951. My father Leonard Reginald Swatton b.1912 d. 1993 lived I believe for about 5 years with his grandparents about 1922. Whilst he was there his grandmother died and is buried in the church at C.D. Also whilst there he recalled there was a fire and all the men and boys came out and filled buckets of water from the stream that was in front of the house where he lived with grandparents. Other members of the Swatton family are also buried in the churchyard at C.D. My grandad - John - settled in Winchester, Hampshire where he met his future wife (Lucy Hutchings), over time they had 6 children - one of which was my father. He out of the six was the only one to have children. My Dad was a Prisoner of War for 5... Read more
Leghorne House
Hi all, I lived in Collingbourne Ducis for a short time in 1969/70, it was a beautiful place and I have never forgotten my stay there but I can't seem to find Leghorne House, I have been back and looked for it but had no luck and nobody seemed to have heard of it. I would love to know if anybody remembers it and also any history relating to the house.
The Smith or Obriant Families of This Parish
I am looking for any trace of John Smith who married Repentance Obriant in Collingbourne-Kingston on 25th December 1773. She was my late husband's 6x gr.grandma and any info about the area of descendants would be great.
Tidworth Garrison Theatre
My grandfather Herbert Pickernell opened the Garrison Theatre Tidworth in 1909. comming over from the Empire Theatre Swindon. On his retirement in 1947 my father Kenneth Pickernell took over the management, until 1987. I then managed the theatre from 1987 until my retirement in 2010. Many famous people and well known artists appeared at the theatre. Both my grandfather and father kept a lot of archive material of Tidworth which I have continued to do. If anyone has any old photos, documents or items of Tidworth pre 1960 I would be grateful if you would donate them to our future Tidworth Museum. They will be logged in your name, which will be displayed with the item when placed in the museum My address is 7 Coronation Road Ludgershall Andover Hants SP11 9NN. I am at present the Tidworth Community Area Partnership Coordinator, and can be contacted on 01980 602030. Having been associated with Tidworth all my life I have many memories and stories to tell, both military and civilian. Look forward to hearing from anyone. Tony. Childhood Memories
My mum Dorothy Elizabeth Pratt was born in Nepaul Road in 1927. I was born in Salisbury Infirmary in 1950 and lived with my mum and granny and grandad (Bill and Eileen Pratt), I had a great time when I was little playing on the Garrisons football pitch, I use to sit in a tray and slide down the hill onto the pitch. The Ghurkhas were posted at the Garrison at the time and they were so friendly. My best friend Barbara Harris lived down the road with her family. My grandad worked in the office at Bulford Camp sorting out the supplies. He use to come home at 1pm for his dinner, and then the big army lorry would come and pick him up and take me with him. I always remember, even though I was only about 4 years old, I was left in the office on my own for a few minutes, but in that time I managed to stamp... Read more
