This corner of Fairhaven Lake provides a quirky aside to the larger statement made by the leisure facilities in the gardens proper. The uniforms worn by the soldiers show that they are wounded veterans recovering at one of the many temporary hospitals and convalescent homes made available during the Great War.

When I was a child in the 1960's, my granddad would take my brother and myself to the old Fire Station. He had just retired after 30 years in the Fire Service. His name was Albert Newns. He had been Station Officer there then ADO at Firebrigade HQ at Fulwood. We used to have a look at the engines and were allowed in them. I trotted through and round the square in 1955 as I lived at 28 Park Road just off Talbot Square. I attended a ballet school (hidden on the right hand side of shown picture) and if memory served me correctly ballet school was called Stewart School of Dance
My experiences of the St Anne's Pier Entrance took place in 1955. After sailing my boat on the nearby model boat pond, I was given a few coppers to spend in the games arcade which was just inside the entrance. Most involved flicking a ball bearing around a vertical loop, hoping to see the ball fall into a hole which would result in a cascade of pennies falling into the little tray.
