Growing up in Fawley
I was born at Copthorne Lane. I spent many happy times in Fawley, my friend and I used to cycle all over. I loved times spent sailing on the Solent. I worked for Ken Wheller as a paper girl, spent many hours in his company, what a nice guy. Sadly he passed away a few years ago. I still have contact with Fawley and visit often, but did'nt go back for many years. Now the old farm at the top of Copthorne Lane has gone. Having helped out on the farm, I rememmeber going the long way round on the day the pigs and cows were taken to market. One night the pigs got out, and there were me, mum, dad and my brother chasing them all over the village. The sow charged my mum and she belted up a tree, boy, I had never seen her move so fast. Mum also worked at Calshot air force base as a waitress, how bonny she looked in her uniform. The Christmas that they put on for us kids was great, ah happy days. I have to say I had a great childhood, shame that kids today don't know how to make their own entertainment, there was none in Hampshire then and you made your own.

RE: RE: Growing up in Fawley
Hi Susan It's a very long time since we have have any contact, are you still ringing the bells? I found no bells when I moved out to South Africa to live. Still, I am back now and living in Wokingham. Must go now as I am at work but would love to have a good old chinwag some time. Linda Alborough ( Bull ) P.s I'm sure you knew.

RE: RE: Growing up in Fawley
Memories of my misspent youth growing up in Fawley were brought to the fore last March, as my dear Mum passed away, myself, husband and youngest son spent 5 lovely days in a rented house in Hythe as we attended Mum's funeral. We visited the Nelson pub whilst there, reminiscing with my husband I confessed to being barred from there for, of all things, under age drinking (good job my son wasn't with us). How nice it was to spend my mornings drinking coffee and looking out over Southampton Water, memories drifting by now and then. Memories of Sunday night runing down the pier (after having been at the teenager night at Mecca dance hall), hoping the last bus to Fawley hadn't gone, if it had that meant a long walk from Blackfield. Taking our bikes on the ferry to Southampton to go to the swimming baths. I have to say that Fawley and the surrounding district has changed so much, it was so nice to see that most of the new houses in Fawley do blend in with the old, what a shock to see Copthorne Lane with new houses and bungalows builit on it, the waste land has now been fenced off by Esso, what a shame, as many a happy hour or two was spent messing around the woods, climbing trees or just messing about. Nearly all the old shops have gone now, I remember buying sweets at the Chocolate Box with my pocket money (the grand sum of sixpence). Copthorne House has now gone, that was where I first learnt to horse ride, the Mayo twins kind of taught me, put me on one of their horse's, slapped it's backside and off I went.
