Northumberland memories

war years

I remember the army on the village green with their huts around the tank turn which is still there to-day. I have many happy memories of life in the village and how wives of soldiers came and stayed with the families who found them beds.

The Mining Community

Although I no longer live in Northumberland, I still have a soft spot for North Broomhill.

I was born in School Row in 1943. From there we moved to Coronation Terrace in 1947 which was a complex of rudimentary row of two terraces of corrugated dwelling places at the foot of the pit heap.

The street was a dirt... [more]

MY DAUGHTERS

MY TWO DAUGHTERS ELSIE AND EUNICE AND THEIR FRIEND MARY YOUNG ARE THE CHILDREN ON THIS PHOTOGRAPH.  THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN ON THE 'LITTLE SHORE' AND THEY WERE TRYING TO KEEP THE INCOMING TIDE OUT OF THEIR SANDCASTLE.  THEY ALL HAVE GROWN UP FAMILIES OF THEIR OWN NOW.  42 YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE THAT DAY.

Grandma

My grandma Annie Moody lived in Amble as a child. She was born in 1897 but I think they lived somewhere else first, but she and her parents are on the 1901 cencus as living in Amble. My mother (her daughter) Mary Maddison nee Stewart has many happy memories of visiting her granny and grandad there too. Before 1966 when I... [more]

Nethergrange

I remember being at Nethergrange with Jean Newbigin, and remember when she met her husband to be, and the building of their boat. In fact later , when we moved to Ravenslaw in Alnwich (in our third year) Jean and I shared a room as I was also a student at Alnwick Teacher Training College, living at Nethergrange in... [more]

College days

We built our 60ft catamaran at the farm at the bottom of this lane. I met my husband in the Schooner Hotel on the 13th November 1970. I was attending Alnwick College and we lived in Nether Grange as opposed to the castle. Wonderful village, friendly people.

Northumberland Tyne and Wear Photographic Memories

The roofs of the nave and south aisle are so low that a first glance at St Michael's often leaves visitors thinking that the building is semi-derelict. The chancel, with its high-pitched roof, dates from the early 13th century, though some parts of the church are thought to be 12th-century. The aisles were added in the 14th century and a chantry endowed in 1331.... [more]

Felton stands on the north bank of the Coquet, and it was here that the Great North Road once crossed the river by way of the old bridge featured in the picture. The bridge, complete with pedestrian refuges, is thought to be 15th-century: some of the houses facing the bridge date from the early 17th to early 19th centuries.
