More about this scene

This picture shows the ruin of the donjon. The curtain wall was once a lot higher, but was reduced when the castle was slighted during the English Civil War. In 1399 Richard II was brought here after being intercepted by the Earl of Northumberland. Richard had returned from Ireland, landing at Milford Haven, and was on his way to Conway to suppress a rebellion and meet up with his cousin Henry Bolingbroke. Henry had other ideas; he wanted the throne for himself, and had the support of a number of lords including Northumberland. Richard was persuaded to ride to Flint with only a small personal escort of five esquires, and Northumberland was lying in wait for him. Richard was eventually taken to Pontefract Castle where he died, either murdered or starved to death.
