Horniman Walrus
I too, remember the Horniman Walrus. I heard somewhere that it was "overstuffed" and that Walruses' skin is supposed to be all wrinkly. The taxidermist probably didn't know this and filled up the skin to maximum capacity. It was still on display in about 2000, when I last was there. What about the interminable and dreary exhibition of Romanian folk art they seemed to have on display for years in the 1950's? I also remember the Chinese bell, a big clock on the top floor and a frightening torture apparatus somewhere near the aquarium, and hundreds of skulls, all in the 1950's.

Oh Happy Days, Just After The War!
Hello from Canada, I remember the old Capital, it was an ABC theatre. I remember the old 68 and 72 trams going up the hill. I used to go to Saturday morning pictures in this theatre, oh happy days! Sainsbury's butcher shop, was just across the road. During the war, my mother used to send me to line up for 'off the ration' sausages. The subway under the railroad, used to lead to the 194 bus stop outside the Foresters Pub. I used to live in the Perry Rise. At that time, it was only a penny for the bus. But we had not a penny, so we had to walk . Posted 30th April 2012.

I remember attending Christchurch School and having an early Friday finish on condition that you attended church on Sunday.
H.L Daniel's Motorcycle Shop & Buckley's Bike Shop
I lived in Forest Hill in the 1960's on a road off Dartmouth Road. Two shops on the road stand out in my memory. Probably in 1965 both were still trading.
H.L. Daniel was a Norton works motorbike rider , probably in the 1930's and competed in the TT. Later he had a shop in Dartmouth road selling Nortons and there was always a big featherbed* twin and later the first Commando displayed in the window. He was an unlikely looking works motorcyclist, small, balding with pebble glasses and he wore a white coat while working in the shop.
I had a motorized push-bike with a Trojan Minimotor, 50cc which drove the rear wheel with a roller. I bought it for £5 at Buckleys the nearby bike shop. Buckleys were a bike shop of the old school, at one time they assembled their own Buckley badged frames.
