CORNWELL CHURCH

This is a beautiful little church, well worth the walk to get to it. My great-great-great grandfather is buried in the church yard and I went there in 2004, with my mother when she came home for what was to be her last visit. She died a short two years later from a muscle neuron disease and the wonderful... [more]

Escape to the country

I travelled to Chipping Norton to start a new life.  When I stepped off the coach on the high street and looked across the road I saw a very grand looking building and a sign saying The White Hart Hotel.  My next thought was I am going to work in that hotel, which I did!  I was also able to live-in,... Long Wivets

As an eight year old boy I lived at Long Wivets, the third house in this photo. We lived there in 1955 and 1956. My father was Lt. Andrew Dill and he was stationed at Brize Norton. That was a very nice time of my life and I enjoyed Burford very much. If anyone remembers me or another member of my... [more]

The Marlborough

The white building in the picture below the church tower was the Marlborough pub. During the war through till the early 1950s my grandmother and grandfather were licencees and my father was brought up there. I have a picture of my grandfather and myself as a small child in the back yard of the pub. I'm not sure... [more]

Flying from Brize Norton

Although I have been to RAF Brize Norton a few times I have never actually seen the place with the name Brize Norton as each time I have on army duty and taking off on an RAF plane!
In the 1970s I flew with members of my regiment several times to Germany and Malta and RAF Brize Norton supplied the... [more]

Cadel shop - Market Square

The shop in the middle of the picture with the two awnings (now the Nationwide building society) used to belong to my great grandmother Eva Cadel and was a wool and toy shop.  My Grandmother and Great Aunt ran it until 1971.  My grandmother Joan ran the toy side and my Great Aunt Mary ran the wool.  Many people still today... The Hook Norton Brewery

This Oxfordshire village has a fine brewery and one summer's day they organised an open day, tours of the brewery, ale sampling and entertainment. I was part of that entertainment playing my accordian with the Whitethorn Band. The acoustics were absolutely fabulous as we sat on the kegs of beer and provided music for Whitethorn Morris and their repertoire of clog... [more]

My great-great-grandparents

Although I have no immediate connection with Ledwell my great-great-grandparents and their family lived here in 1911. His name was George Carpenter and his wife was Alice. They had five children, all being born in Ledwell. In 1911 his job was a farm labourer and their address in 1911 was Ledwell, Steeple Aston. If anyone has any pictures of this area... [more]

Abingdon Photographic Memories

Until the mid 19th century, Abingdon grew little beyond its Tudor limits, but in the 1860s an estate of villas around a public park was set out to the north of Ock Street. The park itself was presented by Christ's Hospital charity, who ran the almshouses. Little was developed until the later 1870s, but Albert Park heralded a new era of... [more]

All Saints' Parish Church was rebuilt in 1837 by William Fisher from Oxford, who kept the plain 13th-century west tower and reused several windows, doorways and arches. He was mainly a builder, but designed a few churches, including St Ebbe's in Oxford (1814-17). Above the porch door is a niche with a modern statue of Jesus with two lambs.

Abingdon Photographic Memories

The last view in Marcham was taken from the parish church tower looking south-east towards Parkside, a large estate of 1950s former council houses. To the right behind the line of lime trees is the east arm of Church Street, which runs along the south side of the churchyard. To the left and out of view is Denman College, formerly Marcham Park, a late Georgian mansion. Now owned by the National Federation of Women's... [more]
