After The War
I lived at 257 Frimley Green Road- where Warrens' garage now stands - 1942 to 1954. There was an air-raid shelter on the Green which we watched being demolished. Every Nov 5th there was a gigantic bonfire on the Green, fired by paraffin donated by Percy Warren; squaddies would come down from Deepcut and add to the tumult, one year detonating the Gents at the Rose & Thistle. Whenever I'm in the south I have a wander round the village, which has changed remarkably little; even The Mons is still there (or was in 2006) run by Mr Clapshaw, later by Mr Heap, who was one of the few shopkeepers who didn't object (usually with good reason) to the village boys. My friends were Anthony Harrison, Geoffrey & Mervyn Ellis, Chris Dawes, the Warren twins, Ron ("Freckleface") Riley...any of them still alive?

RE: RE: After The War
David,
I was in Frimly Green today (24 August 2009) and spotted 'The Mons' as it looked so old-fashioned and from another era.
Sadly, it looked as if it had closed but the fascia caught my attention, especially as it said it used to be a lending library as well.
I have uploaded a photo of this on flickr at the link below. I'd love to know more about the shop.

RE: RE: After The War
Referring to David Kearns memories I just wondered if Chris Dawes was related to the Dawes Family( Butchers in Frimley Green & Mytchett) I attended many Nov 5th bonfires on the green. Malcolm Dawes was my best man when I was married in 1959 at St Andrews church. I have a coronation mug given out to parents at the recreation ground in 1937( I think) for Edward 8th, which of course never happened.

RE: RE: After The War
Really enjoyed your memory of Frimley Green. I lived in Mytchett for a number of years and at one time worked for the old Mid Wessex Water Coy.
I wonder if you have any memories of the local Scout Group, and Mr.Warner who was Scoutmaster in the early days.
